Re: Pictures Of My Mali's
Diet
They eat a huge variety of foods. Use what's fed to iguanas with a few additions. The core diet should always be: collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens...dandelion greens if you can get them. Another food for uros is wild birdseed without the sunflower seeds and ground up 15 bean soup from the grocery store (remove the kidney beans). I use a cheapo $15 coffee grinder to grind up the beans.
New thoughts on feeding animal protein are surfacing and it's thought they eat much less bugs than first thought. Crix, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, and silkworms should be fed very occasionally. These are proving to cause renal failure in uros if fed in excess. I only feed these things to the uro here twice a month.
Here is a couple of diet variations you can use if you choose from:
Variation one:
collard greens
mustard greens
turnip greens
dandelion greens
parsnips (shredded)
escarole
radicchio
bellpepper (gold and orange are favs)
butternut squash (shredded with peel...remove flesh and seeds)
bird seed (budgie blend - no shelled seeds)
ground 15 bean soup (remove kidney beans)
Variation two:
collard greens
mustard greens
turnip greens
arugula
parsnips
green beans
cilantro
acorn squash (shredded withpeel)
cactus leaves (spines removed)
bird seed (budgie blend - no shelled seeds)
ground 15 bean soup (remove kidney beans)
All should be chopped and shredded quite small to accommodate the small size of the uros mouth. The food processor is my very best friend on salad making days... .

Awwwe!! (((HUGS)))
It'll be ok. You just have some catching up to do for these guys. One thing so many people tend to do is trust the people who sell these things. We suppose to right? I mean...we trust Dr.s for medical stuff, dentists for our teeth - why not pet store people for our animals. Unfortunately - that ain't the way of the pet trade more often than not. They're usually just high school kids in a first job.
Hopefully someone else can offer some other suggestions for you, too. I'm only offering what I can think of at the moment. I could be missing some really simple things that could make things easier, too.

Nice pics. Don't worry about getting everything right immediately. One step at a time.

Re: Pictures Of My Mali's
I just want to say that although most employees at those big, chain pet stores have no idea what they're talking about...there is still hope! I work at a small chain pet store, and I make sure I educate myself on all the animals we sell, so that I can give customers the proper information. Although mst of my co-workers could give a **** less, I care not only about the customer's satisfaction, but the health of the animals.
That's all I got to say about that....Beautiful Uros by the way
