Re: To Shag or Not TO Shag?????

So are you saying you're not positive about the sex? Mali's are generally pretty easy to sex once they hit maturity. The males heads turn very dark to nearly black in some instances. The females retain an "earthy" look. Before the obvious physical color change - the hemipenal bulges are another way to sex.

How old are they?

It could be just a show of dominance. I haven't seen any of your other posts - so if you've already given some of this info...I'M SORRY!! ;-)

Two males should not be housed together. This is asking for trouble. Lizard species are often fiercely territorial and this can only lead to at lease one becoming the omega who often begins to suffer physically while the alpha becomes kind of the "Survival of the Fittest".

If you have one of each sex - then this is very normal behavior - obviously. Please read up on egging and uros for more on what to expect for the expecting female. Please think long and hard about the moral issues of breeding, but because this isn't one of the "disposable" lizards such as igs - the chances of good rehoming is better - but can you guarantee all the babies go to good homes if you choose to try to hatch them.

Lots to think about here...;-)

Re: To Shag or Not TO Shag?????

4 months old is awfully young to sex a uro. Between 6-9 months is easier. What size enclosure are they housed in? What does your basking area consist of (including UVB, heat source and temps)?

There is an option when you reply using the "Post Reply" button instead of the "Quick Reply" option. Check it out and SHOW US THE PICS!! :-D

Re: To Shag or Not TO Shag?????

What is their length? I'd say they look older then that. Mali's grow pretty slowly compared to many reptiles. Their mating rituals are not very subdued if you know what I mean. There's usually quite a bit of the male biting the female.
From the pics I would say they get along just fine. Males that grow up together have usually determined the pecking order at a young age. Once it's determined it usually takes something new like the introduction of a female to throw it off. Just the same keep an eye out for aggression. If they are always seen basking together they are fine. If one appears to be hiding a lot of the time it could be a sign. Stress is something to avoid with reptiles as it leads to many health issues.

Re: To Shag or Not TO Shag?????

One laying on top of the other in the basking area keeps the other from getting the good stuff too. This is the reason I suggested two basking area in one set-up. This way both have access to full basking rather than the alpha taking up most and the omega settling what's left...;-)
