Re: Heating Rocks ???????

You should put it back in the box and return it...or cut the cord off and use it as a decoration.

They are just lizard slow cookers.

Re: Heating Rocks ???????

Absolutely! Those things are dangerous. They can malfunction resulting in overheating.
And they do nothing to heat the enclosure so if temps aren't right the animals will lay on them all the time compounding the burn danger

Re: Heating Rocks ???????

Those are more fun products that pet stores sell that are actually harmful to the animals they're selling them for. I really am not sure how they can keep doing that. Every reptile I've adopted so far has come with a heat rock. I snip off the cord and use it for decoration.

Reptiles generally get their heat from above - the sun. The ground is warm, of course, but less so than the air around the reptile. So an overwarm basking spot has detrimental effects when the reptile eats, then lays on it. The biggest problems, though, are that they tend to short out, and one part will get burning hot and another will be ice cold. So it's really easy to burn the reptile.

There are some pretty nasty photos floating around the internet of these types of burns, if you care to look them up.

I really wish pet stores would stop selling these.

Re: Heating Rocks ???????

I like the heat emitters.
I use them with both my iguana and my ball pythons. Heat but no light and they last a lot longer than a night light bulb!

Re: Heating Rocks ???????

Ok, so during the day I keep the bulb on then at night I keep the heat emitter on... or both on during the day?
