Use a digital thermometer to confirm you're getting the proper temps during the day. Depending on your enclosure, and the ambient temp, etc, you may need both.

Re: Heating Rocks ???????

If you get a ceramic heat emitter, you need to be sure your animal cannot touch it or he WILL get horribly fried. Those things get INSTANTLY hot, so watch out yourself too once it's plugged in.
The best is to get a protective cage to cover it. Even if you think your animal will not climb up and touch it, it's better to be safe than sorry!
Also be sure that you use a ceramic fixture for it (the plastic ones will melt).

And if you hook it up to a thermostat you can just leave it running. The thermostat will turn it off and on as needed

Re: Heating Rocks ???????

i'm glad you're taking back the heat rock. i used to work in a pet store for about 6 years total. i joined HC a few years into my job when I got really interested in reptiles and even though we sold heat rocks, i never reccommended them for anything after I learned about them. it was pretty interesting to see how long those packaged heat rocks sat there on the shelf.

this place is definitely a valuable source of info!

I work in a pet store also, and whenever people ask about heat rocks I always jump up and say "don't use those they're horribly dangerous" no matter who is helping the customer.

Good for you!

Although... I'll never forget once when I was trying to get a heat rock for something. I forget now what it was for. I want to say a demonstration for a school project, but I honestly can't remember why I needed it. Anyway, I'm glad for their good intentions, but the stupid store workers wouldn't listen to me, and would not allow me to get one. I was pretty angry when I left the store. I think I went to another not too far away and got one there. I really wish I could remember why I wanted it, though.
