Nigerian questions

Brief introduction: I had an Indian/hardwicki uro that died recently. I came home from work and found him dead in his enclosure, and he looked as if he had "frozen" in his tracks before passing. He was active up until then, so I was very surprised when he died.

That said, I checked out a local reptile specialty shop (not the one where I purchased the aforementioned uro), and they've got a nice pair of Nigerian Uros (male & female). The animals look quite healthy, and I'm impressed by the conditions in which all their lizards are kept.

I've got the other uro's 55g tank, and am wondering if that would be a suitable enclosure for the two Nigerians. I understand the heating and lighting requirements, and have that covered. I'd kept my uro on a sand substrate, but am considering moving away from that (not sure). Also, would the pair require one large hide, or two smaller ones?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Nigerian questions

Welcome to HC. For 2 I would go with a larger enclosure or seperate them into 2 55's

Re: Nigerian questions

First I would be looking into why your other one died. How long did you have it? Do you know how old it was? Perhaps your husbandry techniques were not quite right.

Re: Nigerian questions

I agree with Mike. There could be many reasons why your last Uro died.

Impaction from the sand could have been one of those reasons. Was he pooping regularly before he died? If not, it's likely he swallowed some sand and over a period of time, it built up and formed a barrier.

You may want to steer clear of sand for a little while with these. Simple newspaper or paper towels work very well, and there's no chance of them swallowing it.

Unless you've got a male and a female, or two females, I'd probably separate the two into their own enclosures. A 55 g tank isn't quite large enough to handle both of them, I think. In any case, they should each have a few hides they can choose from. Forcing them into one may cause them to fight.

Re: Nigerian questions

playsand is fine as long as the uro is over 6 inchs. but deffinatly dont want to keep 2 in a 55 gal. also 55 gal tank is a bit tricky to get the perfect temps and get the uva/uvb in but if you need help I have done it and can help you if you need it
