Sand is an alright substrate to use. Not the best but not the worst. It's even better if you buy some of the Excavator to put on top. It will harden up nicely. One thing to watch out for when using sand is that Uros like to thrash their food around. It oftens ends up all over the place. You can also use pieces of slate where the food dish is to help eliminate the food contacting the sand.

and get yourself a floor tile to put down where his food goes. This will help keep the food out of the sand.

and rule number one, almost never listen to anyone at petsmart. 9 times out of 10 they couldn't tell a mali from a leo.

Re: Are they going to stay that color??

Oh yeah. He *will* get sand in his food. Another option could be to take him out into a separate cage when feeding him. That way you make sure he won't be swallowing any sand.

Personally, I've found sand to be messy and stressful. I switched Maize to newspaper, and he didn't bat an eye. He used to hide in his cave all the time. When I switched substrate, he actually came out quite a bit more. That can be attributed to more than one thing, probably, but I don't doubt the substrate change is a major factor. He also eats more than he used to, which is a big plus.

Re: Are they going to stay that color??

newspaper is a VERY common substrate. Remember, your mali doesn't live on the land in their natural environment. Its just something we feel like they go on because they are reptiles. Mostly they are on rocks or compact dirt.

Re: Are they going to stay that color??

Thats usually why people go with sand, because its more appealing to the eye. If you end up liking paper, you can buy big rolls of brown paper. Might look a little more natural.
