I have a sahran red uromastyx and she has basking temps of 130 on the hot side, cool side of 85 and then about 90 ambiant temps. UVB light on 10 hours a day of course, no water in the cage and a mix of greens and bird seeds. My problem is that she has a black area on her tail. It's towards the right hand side up more by the top. Would this be tail rot or just unshed skin? I just got her a week ago and she has had it hte whole time. The person I got her from had water in her tank so I don't know what is going on. No herp vets are in the office this week either. What would u think it is?

Can you post a picture of it? As detailed as possible would be helpful.

Unfortunately what is called tail rot in Uros could be many different fungal infections. Most likely it will either be layers of unshed skin, tail rot or dry gangrene. If it looks like the tail spikes are coming off I would lean towards tail rot or dry gangrene. Both warrant a vet visit. It's not an emergency situation but get him in as soon as you can.

As far as I can tell it looks like the natural coloring, is there any change in texture, like it is softer or smelly or has a flaky quality to it?

could it have gotten burned with the previous owners? do you know if that set up had the lights where the uro could get against them?

I can't even mess with her tail or she whips like crazy lol. I got to it last night and a part flaked off so im thinking part of stuck shed maybe? As far as I can tell she couldn't get close enough to get burned in the shop. The shop I got her from is acutally very good with animals but with the uro's he's stuck on the idea they need a water dish.

Try and get the loose stuff off. It'll help the healing process. Still I agree though it looks so much like a pattern it's hard to say.
