Re: Uro concern

But you should take this time to wonder maybe there is something wrong with your setup that would cause this issue. Constipation isn't the problem it's just a symptom of a larger issue. If indeed it was constipation I would figure out how to keep your Uro more hydrated.

Re: Uro concern

In the wild Uromastyx will burrow to reach cooler, damper earth sometimes, so a moist hide and occasional bath isn't a bad idea. Also, if she's ever constipated you could try feeding her some prunes. It works for people, I think I've heard tales of it working for reptiles too. Could be worth a try anyway.

Re: Uro concern

Whenever I give my uro a small dish of water its like I just gave the devil holy water, he looks at it and backs away like he is scared of it....and will sit looking at it as if to say "MOVE IT!!" dont want it there, and relaxes again once I move it out and goes back to his normal business.....

Re: Uro concern

I've started adding a little more water to her food dish, just to up the amount of water consumed. I might try to put some soil in the tank near where she sleeps, so she can decide if she wants to sleep on that instead of sand (ie. she'll kick it in her hide if she does) or I may try to put some into her hide and see if she likes it or not.

Re: Uro concern

Good ideas. You can also use the spaghnum moss and mist it down in her hide regularly.

Re: Uro concern

Hmm, I'd be a little bit sketchy about putting in a moist area in the hide for a desert animal. Most likely it'd be detrimental to the skin.

Re: Uro concern

Quite the opposite really. It's detrimental to the health of your Uro that you do put in a moist hide. Uro's are burrowing reptiles, they may be found in the desert but they live in small areas where there is moisture in the ground. If there was no moisture their burrows would collapse. Water is the spice of live. All reptiles should be given areas of varying humidity just like you would with temps. Tail rot has been documented in Uros but usually the case with that is that the entire enclosure has had too much humidity and no areas to dry off. I've kept Uros with moist burrows for over 5 years and they thrived on it. There is a difference between a reptile being alive and actually thriving. Most conditions of illness in Uros can be contributed to being dehydrated. Unfortunately most of the caresheets for Uros are grossly inaccurate stating they should be kept on sand or worse birdseed.

Re: Uro concern

This is a common misconception, that desert animals should always be kept bone dry. Even in the most arid of places there are spots where humidity is available to them, holes, burrows etc. There is also dew and periodic ran.
In a complete abscence of water, nothing lives.
