I did it again...

I was hanging out at the Reptile House... waiting for my doctor to come back from lunch when I fell in love.
I couldn't believe how cute and awesome (all at the same time) the uromastyx are!! It was a Mali, I believe and I swear to you- I started talking to it and it was tilting its head as if it was seriously listening. The guy who works there (knows me pretty well) handed him over to me and I swear my heart melted.

So the plan is... forget the tattoo I was going to get for my birthday and instead ... get a Uro!! I've been browsing the forums pretty much since I've gotten back. But if anyone has advice, knows of good breeders, caresheets, etc.. I want EVERYTHING I can get my hands on!!

OK I know exactly how you feel my friend is looking after someone elses 'evil little monster' and he's just the friendliest guy ever and so strong! I picked him up and he immediately demanded to lick me and I swear that guy's tongue could shake the earth...so solid but gentle and soo soo awesome and intellegent looking. sigh...I really can't be the crazy herp lady *cry* I have one snake and one lizard and I wanted to stop at that after I got the one very cool millipede at the pet shop lol

I would have to agree that uro's are by far the absolute wildest looking lizards and is why I bought a male mali (U.maliensis) myself and will be getting a male ornate (U.ornata) around April then females for both and will be breeding them in about 3 years want to make sure I know everything I can before attempting the breeding process.

2 very reputable breeders Doug Dix and Lindsay Pike http://deerfernfarms.com/Uromastyx_index.htm

http://urotopia.com/ I bought my mali from Doug and will be buying the ornates from Lindsay who lives about a half hour away from me.It's definitely better to buy a uro from a reputable breeder as they'll be healthy and well cared for.

Care sheets:http://deerfernfarms.com/Uromastyx_Care.htm

http://www.uromastyxspecialities.com/care.html

http://www.kingsnake.com/uromastyx/index.html

The best beginner species are mali(U.maliensis),ornate(U.ornata) and Indian(U.hardwicki).Males are more colorful then females generally but some females can be just as colorful as males and are called male mimics.Ornates males are very colorful.

The minimum size cage would be 36in.long/18in.wide/18in.high and this is good for small to medium size uro and as it gets larger an adult uro would need a cage of 4ft.long/2ft.wide/2ft.high.If you can build it bigger then go bigger.I'll be building a cage for my 2 year old mali in October and it will be 6ft.long/2ft.wide/2ft.high.I wanted to make it 3 feet wide but I don't have the room so 2 feet will have to do.

Temperatures they will need is:Basking(surface) temp.120-130 deg.,warm end ambient(air)temp 100 deg. and cool end of 85 deg..

They should be fed a staple diet of curly endive, escarole, dandelion greens and bok choy and you can mix in others occasionally which will be listed in care sheets.

Research,research and research some more!!!!!

Hope this helps.

You can bet on it! My birthday isn't till November. So I have MONTHS of obsess over this.
Now, what I'm wondering is how fast do they grow.
I blinked and my water dragon is getting BIG! Are they fast growers?
I have a 50 gallon tank that fits the proper size, I should probably start with a baby then and let it take its time growing...
I have a while before I move out and am capable of getting something bigger.
The Mali's are my fav.. they don't get very big either. I heard usually under 13 inches, right?
Well, thanks for all the sites, I'm sure I'll be busy for a while looking through them!

He's cool with it fortunately, and once he's done with all his graduate school he'll be getting some of his own too!!

I think after the corn and uro I'm going to stop until I move out (or fall in love again)
