RES eye color?
My baby RES has blue eyes. Is this normal or could there be something wrong with his eyes? I read all the book and nobody metioned anything about eye color but all the pictures of babies they either had green or yellow eyes. Thanks.

the pupil is black, but the iris is blue, or the pupil is blue? Turtles are not supposed to have blue eyes, that is very strange. It doesn't sound like anything good. I doubt the eyes just happen to be blue, its not normal.

the pupil is black and the iris is blue. Other than his eyes being blue he seems to have good eye sight. I was thinking maybe its kinda like dogs eyes maybe blue when born but they usually change color as they grow. Everything else with him seems fine eats good, now he has adusted enough that he will bask when we are in the room, and he is an excellent swimmer. So I don't know if its just him or if something could go wrong.

The thing that concerns me is that turtles' eyes are often a good indicator of how healthy they are. If the eyes are filmy, they may appear slightly bluish, so that's what I was wondering about. Did they always look blue? How blue are we talking about here? Lie bright blue, or a pale, almost white blue? What's his habitat like?

They are a bright blue, clear and very alert. His habitat is a 10 gal. tank don't know what kinda of filter. Waters clear no cloudyness in it. My step-mom bought him for me she say he was the most active turtle in the tank. All the other ones just lazed around didn't swim much but him he was all over the place and a great swimmer. But I just want to say we love him dearly and we hope nothing is wrong with his eyes.

Well, maybe he's just got unique eyes. Could you take a picture?
On a seperate note, I'd get a bigger tank for him though. You have the UVB light and a basking light, right?

he will be getting a bigger tank in like 3 months give or take. Either a 55 gal. breeder(do they have that size in breeder) or a 50 breeder long. I had what I thought to be a UVB light (store woman lied to me) so we will be getting one friday. We do have a basking light for him and all. Plus right now while the weather is still good we take him outside for a little while to get him some UVB rays. Also for a turle his size what is a good UVB light to get him. I see some online that say like 2.0 and 5.0? What does that mean and how do I know I got the right one?

What type of basking light do you have? For a fluorescent UVB light I'd get a Reptisun 5.0, by Zoo Med. If you want, you could also go the MV route and get one of the new Megarays. The advantage to the MV is that its a heat lamp and UVB in one. I recommend it for turtles cause it can be tough to get a heat light and UVB light close enough to each other to concentrate the light on the basking spot, but not so close that the heat light melts the fluorescent's fixture. Plus with the fluorescent it needs to be no further than 12 inches from the turtle, and you need to replace the bulb every 6 months. A fluorescent UVB light will still do the trick though. The 50 or the 55 will be great. That's big enough to fit him his whole life. I have no idea what a breeder tank is though.

where can I get one of the new Megarays at? The ones at our one and only pet store here sales is the Reptisun one. For a basking light we have been using a regular household bulb.

A normal house bulb will work fine as the basking light, but only if you also have a UVB light. If your store doesn't carry the MVs, you could order one online. I'm not sure where from though. Anybody know?
