what can i house with 3 baby painted turtles

I have three baby painted turtles in a 10 gal tank. The turtles are at most 2 inches each. The water is probably 5 inches deep. There is a stack of landscaping bricks 2 wide by 2 high that the turtles get out of the water on. Could I house any amphibians with them?

Thanks

Wel, I wouldn't house anything else with your turtles. For one, they'll either try to eat it or it will scare them. Also, your tank is kinda too small already, I wouldn't add anythig else to it. Do you have a filter and all the right lights and stuff? What do you feed them?

i have a filter. the water temp is around 73 degrees. I have a uv bulb for them. There is always rosy red minnows swimming around in the tank. they seem to love these. I also put in a variety of vegetables bt they dont seem to like these as much as minnows and worms. occasionally I feed them wax worms and mealworms. I also feed them reptomin which is a commercial food. I dust the wax worms and meal worms with reptocal. It stays on pretty well in the water because the turtles eat the worms right away so I isnt exposed to water as long.

Thanks

As babies they're almost strict carnivores, but will accept more and more plant matter as they get older. With turtles the filters can be tricky sometimes. You need to make sure its powerful enough, stronger than you would use if only fish were in the tank, but it also needs to be gentle enough so it doesn't make too much current, and it needs to be quiet and have very little vibration or your turtles will grow very stressed after being exposed to it 24/7. Still, the filter is pretty much essential. The bulb is UVB though right? UVA and UVB are very different things, and you didn't specify what kind you had. What about a basking light? You have a basking spot I see, and a UV light of some sort, but a basking light is essential. lol, sorry, just want to make sure the turtles have everything they need. Turtles are right up there with iguanas when it comes to people getting them without knowing all the stuff they require, so I tend to get a little "over-protective" of the turtles out there

i have a exo terra 2.0 bulb. I dont have a basking light How hot should the basking area be?what bulb do you reccomend? I try to put them outside when its warm and sunny, but it is getting colder here in cincinnati so I will probably get a basking bulb. My filter seems like a good one. Is doesnt vibrate and is pretty quiet. It makes a small current. It is not nearly strong enough that it can move the turtles though

Thanks

Congrats on the turtles. Congrats on going out and trying to learn more

But you really need to look at other forms of housing. 3 two inch turtles, should be in a much larger tank. For every inch of turtle, the general rule of thumb states you should provide 10 gallons of water. So you need a minimum of 60 gallon. When a turtle gets sick, it doesnt show it right away. My 5inch turtle is in a 90gallon and a my 8incher is in a 120g. I try to go with more gallons per inch (like 20 or 30g).

Each turtle has its own personality, one of mine will not live with any fish smaller than him and all plants are food, he is 21yrs. The other little guy is more friendly and even as I write his tank has sunfish, crayfish, clams, snails, rock bass and a few rosies. The best way to view turtle tank "friends" , whatever goes in may become food. The turlte decides if he wants companions....lol.

If money is the problem, one can use rubbermaid totes or others similar, that are considerably cheap.

Be very careful with your choice of basking bulb, a tank that small, with bricks in it, will heat up very very quickly. Water depth at that size is not an issue normally, as they are strong swimmers.

Yeah, you'll need a basking light. Since you already have the UVB light though, all you need is a house bulb in a reflector lamp and you'll be good to go as far as the basking light is concerned. Yeah, rubbermaid tubs work great for turtles, though you can't see them through the sides Yeah, if pet stores actually told people how to properly care for turtles, they'd never sell any turtles, so they don't tell you.
