Okay, maybe a little smaller than a dinner plate, but still a fair sized turtle. Going by her size, anyone have a guesstimate as to her age?

I would have to see the Plastron to guess male or female. It is also hard to guess the age since red eared sliders grow at different rates depending on how they are housed. Your turtle appears to have healthy, normal scutes which would make me guess that it has been provided adequate space to grow at a normal rate. I've seen some Red eared sliders that were kept in tanks that were too small for years. The scutes that make of the shell of turtles in this condition are deformed some small, some are big, and none equally proportioned. My guess, if it grew up in a large pond or something similar would be 2.5-3 years old.

The claws look to be male, but a pic of the underside of the tail would definately help.

Hopefully this will help:

S/he was in drydock and flipped over LOL
And Ssativa, you'd be shocked at the conditions we rescued her from. S/he was in a 30gal tank with no basking area all her life, and it took a LONG time and a lot of work to get her shell to look that good. S/he had layers upon layers of unshed scutes, and we had to force-drydock her because she had no idea how to climb out of the water. We keep her in a 50-60gal tub with a small bubbler to give her some current, keep her supplied with goldfish and reptipellets, and drydock her regularly to take care of her shell. She's not the friendliest of pets, but she's really fun to watch -- We even had her out on the front lawn the other day. You should have seen her take off through the grass!

Male hands down. Check out those front claws, and the size too.

LOL guess I'll have to get used to calling her "him!" Frank he is then (but I'm still gonna call him Frankie, it seems to suit him somehow!)

lol, oh yeah, that turtle's 100% MALE! If your vet couldn't tell though, he/she is obviously not a good vet for a turtle. Its extremely obvious he's a male, if you know what to look for.
