Smile 2 New Baby Red Eared Sliders...Need Advice & Help

Okay so it's been a while since I've posted on here but I could really use some help... I already have a Red Eared Slider and my mother thought It'd be cute to get him a little friend(I have been researching and told her that it would be too much work and money for our family). Although when i came back from a visit from my father she had come back with some more "company" for Delilah(My turtles name). Unfortunately she got two(probably just born babies) turtles from Chinatown and they were in the same tank as Delilah. I quickly took them out as soon as Delilah started to kinda shake or wave her hands at both of them. But my mother kept putting them back in the tank until the point were Delilah started to bite at them. I really need help on what to do with them because my mother refuses to buy any of the living requirements for them. They are very cute but I already know how hard it is to take care of them. So if anyone could possibly give me a list of Turtle Adoption Centers where I could put them up for adoption. No one in my family knows how to actually take care of a turtle except me(because of all the research i do on them). I feel really selfish keeping them under these conditions and I only want the best for them. So could anyone tell me what to do with them that way someone who can take care of them properly has them. My mother told me they were my sister's turtles but i told her once we get a house I am more then happy to buy her a tortoise(I have also done research on them). I live in Los Angeles, California and would like to have a list of where I can put these turtles up for adoption or let me know if you can take care or them. Thank you :)

Sorry to hear that your mother did this, doesn't seem really fair for anyone involved.

Did you do a google search for reptile rescues?

Sorry about the situation! But I'm intrigued about the waving thing, my RES's used to do it back and forth all the time and I've been dying to know what it means! Neither of them ever hurt the other so it didn't even cross my mind it might be an aggressive gesture. And yeah, I'm sure reptile rescues would take in turtles as well. They are reptiles after all!

Okay so i found a reptile rescue organization willing to take in the turtles. But the problem in convincing my my mother to get rid of them. I have tried telling her that they may die in less then a year but she does care one bit. Does anyone have any idea on how to convince her that they will go to a better home? I really care about them and I know i can't take proper care of them. By the way the waving thing is like a mating dance or dominance gesture. And in some cases it can lead to violence unless their just practicing the mating dance thing.

Tell her that you can't put them in the same tank! They should be kept in quarantine for 3 months, and also need to go to a vet for test for parasites.

What size tank do you have? It may not be large enough for all of them even after the 3 months of quarantine.

I'm not very familiar with turtles but there are some members who are, hopefully they will chime in and help you out.

It's almost impossible to sex hatclings, so if they both are females and Deliah is a female your looking at 36 inches of turtle. 1 adult female needs a 120 gallon minimum(10 gallons per inch) and 60 gallons per other, so a 240gallon tank would be the smallest tank that would house all 3. RES can be very aggressive with each other, they have bitten off tails, and feet of others.

I would let your Mom know if she wants to keep them they can not go in Deliah's tank because she will kill them. Could you set them up in a rubbermaid tub until you can find a way too keep them? I had a 12inch female RES and she lived in a 150 gallon live stock water tank, I ended up giving her away because my kids where too young stay out of her tank. RES are illegal to sell in Alberta, you can own them but you can't sell them.

Also if the turtles are smaller than 4" then they are illegal to own them.

It seems that all of my turtles are illegal then... I keep on telling my mother that they need to have 10 gallons per inch of shell, but she only says they're fine and they don't need a bigger tank. I keep on trying to show and tell my mother how big they will get, but she isn't listening to me mostly because of my age and gender. Is there anyway someone could email her or call her that way you can convince her that they require a bigger tank or a new home? I'm really concerned about these turtles, but no one in my family really cares what i think.

I was under the impression that the claw shaking thing was something males did to impress females. My Mississippi Map did it tor RES he shared his tank with briefly years ago, that happened to be female, and with which he tried to breed. He also did it to the plecostomus - talk about confusion.
