RES Shedding?

I don't know if it's normal shedding or some kind of disease.
I'll take some pictures and post them in a second.

Re: RES Shedding?

Okay I'm uploading the pictures now. I took tons, so it'll take a while to get them up.
Do you think anyone could tell me if Jeremy's a male or female?
I know you can tell with the nails, but I have nothing to go by as we only have one turtle.

Re: RES Shedding?

It is difficult to tell by the pictures, but to answer your question. Yes, turtles will shed. the scutes will flake and peel which looks like what your RES is doing. I see it being more prominent on the corners which is normal. He looks very healthy otherwise.

Re: RES Shedding?

Some of it was on the corners of the scutes [[I'm guessing that's section of shell..]], and I wasn't too worried about that because I figured he was shedding.
But he has three random spots on his back that don't look the same and that's what I was thinking may be shell rot.
But I've never seen shell rot... So I wouldn't know.

Is he a she?
I just saw a picture of a male vs. female with their claws, and it seems Jeremy's a girl. Hah.

Re: RES Shedding?

Just make sure you don't peel off the shed to help your turtle along. You can damage the under layer of new shell.

Not sure about the shell rot issue though.

Male red ears will have longer front claws then females, it helps to grip them during mating.

Re: RES Shedding?

I guess we'll just say he's shedding then unless it changes something

Re: RES Shedding?

I think you want to make sure that there are no soft spots or anything like that. I don't know anything really about shell rot but soft spots I don't think are a good sign.

Re: RES Shedding?

To tell if your turtle is a male/female I researched on my painted turtle and the bottom shell on the male will be concave and the nails much longer than female. The concave shell will let the male be able to ride on back of female and mate. The long nails help him stay on.

Hope this helps,
Danni
