Sliders and Snappers
Has any one else had this problem? Every one that has seen my turtle (Yellow Belly) so far, or almost every one, has said that they wasn't going to even touch it because it was a snapping turtle. Is it kin to some sort of snapper, is there a snapper in the south that might resemble this, or is it just a big miss understanding? I thought that maybe it's because they will snap at you ocasionaly if handled to long, but that's almost all aquatic turtles. None of my guest have ever seen him snap and some haven't even seen him out of his shell.

Re: Sliders and Snapping Turtles
To many people any water turtle is a snapper!
Just like every snake in the water is a water moccassin.
They obviously have never gotten a good look at a real snapper

Re: Sliders and Snapping Turtles
Your exactly right about that. That goes to show you just important it is to have animal awarness classes.

Re: Sliders and Snapping Turtles
Haha, yeah, they're not related to snapping turtles at all. Plus their size, shape, color, pattern, diet, temperament, and lifestyle are all different

Re: Sliders and Snapping Turtles
Yeah, I thought so, but I didn't want to sound like a know it all when I told them that there was no relation and come to find out that I was wrong. So thanks guys.

Re: Sliders and Snapping Turtles
I have both types of turtles currently in my basement. I can in no way imagine how there can be any confusion! lol
My only guess is yellow bellys can get pretty big. But no where near as big as a snapper can.

Re: Sliders and Snapping Turtles
lol, thats pretty funny. none of the snappers i've seen in my life looked anything like yellow bellied sliders. my guess is that this just falls into the same lack of awareness issue that makes some people think all snakes are venomous. they see an aquatic turtle and believe its a snapper, not knowing there are different species, just like how they see a snake and assume its venomous not knowing there are nonvenomous snakes.
