Abra Cadabra, and the Lettuce Disappears!!
My RES's started eating large amounts of romaine lettuce. I put in a large leaf of it in the tank and in less than ten minutes, Sky and Soldier had worked together to leave nothing but the juicy stem.
Before, several weeks ago, Soldier an Sky had been scared of any greens, probably thinking it was a much larger turtle , lol But now I'm delighted that they are getting a varied, supplemented diet. Thanks for reading!!

Is lettuce recommended for turtles? I know nothing about turtles, but I do know that lettuce is devoid of nutrients. Generally people suggest that you use collards or mustard over lettuce.

I think you may be referring to iceberg lettuce, that kind of lettuce does more harm than good to herps as it lacks nutrients.

All lettuce lacks the nutrients to sustain life. Some are better than others, but even romaine is a no-no as far as a lot of other herps are concerned.

Re: Abra Cadabra, and the Lettuce Disappears!!
Thanks for chiming in Nicole, I was combing through caresheets and didn't find any mention of lettuce, pro or con, but I don't trust anything that I don't read on HC.
Dark leafy greens are far more nutritious, look for collards, mustard, turnip greens, dandelions (don't take them from the yard unless you KNOW they are untreated), kale, chard and bok choy are okay on occasion.

Re: Abra Cadabra, and the Lettuce Disappears!!
Yeah, romaine's "ok". It's not bad for them, but it's really not very good either. It's better than iceburg lettuce, but it's still lettuce. There's really not much in it. Collard greens, bok choy, and SAFE dandelion greens are the best in my opinion (mostly because they're all good choices, they're easy to get, and turtles love them). Mustard and turnip are good too, but I find them harder to come by. Chard is good, but again harder to come by. And kale is good for them, but I have trouble getting my turtles to eat it due to the tougher leaves.
But that's good that they're eating greens now A lot of the time they just have to get used to it. Turtles will also learn to eat foods by watching other turtles eat them. Sometimes they'll even drop their food to steal someone else's food. Kind of a "his piece must be better than mine" kind of mentality I guess ![]()

Re: Abra Cadabra, and the Lettuce Disappears!!
Alrighty, next time I go to the grocery store with my mom I'll get some collards or mustards. Thanks for telling me romaine's bad for my turts, if you hadn't I don't know what would happen to them.

Re: Abra Cadabra, and the Lettuce Disappears!!
Well lettuce isn't BAD for them, but it's just not really good for them either. It's like eating water. So if it's a major part of their diet, then I guess it could be considered bad, because then they're not getting enough nutrients. But there's nothing in lettuce that's harmful to them.
Glad to hear they're eating their veggies though ![]()
