Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

This is what our member has to say: Dog and cat vets should carry Nolvasan as well, I know we do. Sometimes its sold under the generic name "Chlorhexadine"...

send the photos along to the rescue and explain what happened. Sometimes a story with photos is all it takes.

Re: Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

Well, i got in touch with the rescue, sent the pictures. They do not have any space for red eared sliders until maybe june. The'll take a look at him if I drive him up, and might be able to help as much as they can, but i'll have to attempt a rehab myself. So i'll have to go out and pick up some of that nolvasan today. Ill be doing what I can for him for now.
Im wondering a few things though.
I I can control any infection or fungus I think he could pull through. but does anyone know about how much it would run for a professional debriding, nothing extra, no check up, no ,medications, just the debriding. Thats something I cant really do myself, and if its not too much I may be able to spend a little more money on the guy.
Im also wondering if it would be neccesary to eventualy seal the shell up, using some type of liquid skin, or a dental cement or such?

Re: Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

honestly, he needs to be seen by a vet, and unfortunately now that he is yours, its your responsibility to get him checked out.

I'd take a drive up to the rescue. They may have some medication they could give you, since they can't give you space. If you want, i have a spare ceramic light fixture for a UVB bulb (sorry, no bulb) or I have a 24" UVB 10.0 strip light that I got from a freecycler, but alas, no ballast. If either would help, they are yours.

Re: Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

Thanks. I plan on Driving up to the rescue during the week. Hopefully they have antibiotics they can spare. Anything would help.
Would the UVB strip light fit into a regular home depot Fluorescent strip light, or do they need special ballasts?

Re: Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

For a turtle in that bad of shape I would really urge you to go with a megaray from reptile UV. They are far more powerful. They are stranger and last longer.

Re: Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

I have also used megaray with great success and I would really suggest some UV, as you know it is essential for a healthy turtle, and this one needs alot of help. The UV strip light will just work for a regular setup from home depot.

Using a toothbrush is a really good idea and it is something you can do yourself. I wouldn't suggest drilling or sealing the shell up yourself as it would be really easy to make the condition worse. I hate to say it because you are a saint for taking him this far, but I'd take him to a vet if I were you.

It is a real bummer that rescue can't take him, but I bet after they look at him they will really be able to help you, and perhaps they have a vet that can treat him no cost to you. I think that after some inital treatments from the vet your care will be all he needs.

Good luck!

Re: Turtle in Bad Shape... Needs Help.

Also maybe send pictures to a vet school in your area. His shell rot is so horrible that perhaps they will be interested in treating the turtle for training purposes and it will not cost you anything...

Let us know how it goes. I am pulling for him. Thanks for helping him out!
