Was the food digested or still whole when he threw it up? It might be that he intentionally coughed it up because it wasn't going down his throat. My turtle will sometimes bite off more than he can chew and will spit it back up to try and tear it up some more.

The food was partially digested.

my RES Dana threw up once. I was feeding him some banana as a treat and he yanked half of it out of my hand and tried to eat it all before I could get it back. Kids love to eat too much of what they like don't they? lol.
