Eggs
So I've been finding some eggs laid shallow in the tank of my 3-toed box turltes. I'm not prepared to incubate at this point, but I am wondering about a few things.
General Set-up: 3-4 inches of eco-earth/barkchip mix, large "pool", ambient temp around 80-85 with cool side around 70, humidity 60% (I'm working hard on improving that!).
First, I've found 3 in total, the first two a day apart, and this next one almost a week later. I had thought box turtles laid a single clutch in a single nest, but these have been spaced out in time and place.
Second, Link has been pretty shy this last 2 weeks between finding eggs. I had thought at first it was a stress reaction to our loss of heat (3 days in sub-zero weather without heat was NOT fun), but it's been on and toasty warm for a while now! She is starting to get her appetite up again, eating fruits and veggies and a hard boiled egg treat, but won't look twice at crickets or worms - which is all she ever wanted to eat, before!
Any info on their egg-laying cycles or behaviors during this time would be much appreciated! I've been reading articles online, but it never hurts to ask!
Thanks,
Anna
As a side note, their new habitat should be coming soon. I have gotten dibs on an old horse trough (the rubber kind) that will be thoroughly cleaned first of course, but will be a much better shaped life for them - it's a 3.5x3 (or bigger - not sure yet), with rounded corners, so I will be able to redesign the lifestyle to be SO much better. It also has a half-lid that I'm thinkign to use to help keep in humidity! I will also be able to isolate in halves if necessary, just incase Cuff is giving Link too much trouble! Shoudl be able to get it and clean it this weekend. Then, it's just a living room re-arranging away from Cuff and link moving in!
