for some reason, this makes me fell less bad for the turtle and the act of selling if this was the case. I guess for the same reason I don't mind hunting as long as its for food, and not just a trophy to put on your wall.

Re: Chinatown Turtles....
I actually know exactly what you mean, Liz. It doesn't bother me in the least to see animals sold for food, but it often bothers me to see them sold as pets to incompetant people.

My thought as well. They don't use hatchlings for food.

I'm not against using turtles as food either (though as mentioned, 2 inch turtles wouldn't be food). But I am against the way they obtain some of their turtles, the way they keep them, and the way they kill them. If you're going to eat it, that's fine. But there's no point in making it suffer before-hand or depleting the wild population too heavily. That last comment is more in regards to native Chinese species, not red-eared sliders. But the rest still applies.
I don't expect them to provide perfect "pet turtle" care if they're going to eat them, but I've seen some turtles that were in pretty appalling conditions. And I really don't see why they have to cut open gravid turtles while they're still alive.

True, some of those places are pretty bad too.

Re: Chinatown Turtles....
I'm not sure of the number for my local Wildlife of Humane Society. Also, I forgot to mention she wasn't the only person selling them, the illegal sellers were all over Chinatown. I also saw a very small turtle that still had it's egg tooth. I wanted to save them, but if I bought them I would be supporting the cruelty.
