Re: Turtles About to Mate??!!

Depending on where she lives, it might be possible!

I agree with the others, and I'd like to add that now would be a VERY good time to separate these two. It sounds like you've already seen them mating. Which means that the female could already be pregnant. So you need to watch her very carefully and make sure you alter her care and diet a little if she does have eggs. If not, it's likely that they will keep mating, which will be stressful to your female. This can be detrimental to her health. It's better to just go ahead and keep them apart.

Ditto. I really can't stress enough how you can't just sit and wait and see if she lays any eggs. You need to alter her care immediately. Her diet needs a change, and she needs a place to lay those eggs, even though you're not keeping them. And separating the turtles would be a REALLY GOOD idea.

Re: Turtles About to Mate??!!

Hopefully Soldier's mating will not "work" on Sky because the might be too young. Soldier is about four inches in length, Sky is about 3 and 3/4 in. I'm also 99% sure Soldier is older.

I'm not sure I will be able to separate them, my mom only allows me to keep one tank. However, my brother and I are working on saving enough money for a tank at least twice as big as our current one.

I was thinking of getting a Rubbermaid tank, but my mom doesn't want to have a giant "ugly bucket" in the house... Ughh...

Re: Turtles About to Mate??!!

don't forget to look for used tanks. craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums always has ton's in our area and usually much cheaper than new.

Re: Turtles About to Mate??!!

You also might have to consider rehoming all of them except one. Your tank has too many already, and the problem's only going to get worse as they get older. If you can't get more habitats, then you'll have to get rid of them anyway. Might as well do it now before Sky gets even more stressed out. It's either that or get some more tanks. But there's no sense in getting new tanks unless they're large enough to house the turtles as adults. Otherwise you'll have wasted your money on new tanks, just to have to get rid of the turtles eventually anyway.

Re: Turtles About to Mate??!!

I guess I made the mistake of getting so much turtles...But I should do what's better for the animal. I also made the mistake of giving away Shadow to the nearby Marsh Center... They kept him in a small tank with two inches of water, no uvb light, and cold water. I even gave them a caresheet for red ear sliders. They also claimed they knew all the right things a RES needs...

Where should I give away the other turtles? I don't want to make the same mistake of giving them to the Marsh.... Is there a turtle foundation in my area?
