Alligator Snapping Turtles in Kansas

Hello everyone,

I'm new to HerpCenter, but for 11 years now I've been trying to achieve a goal. While alligator snapping turtles are rare in the state of Kansas, they've never been added to the Endangered Species List. The official line is that there is no evidence that they breed here in Kansas. There is a small group of us working to try and find the proof and evidence, preferably in the form of a nest of Alligator Snapper Eggs. This has been a long running project and love of mine. I once raised two baby common snapping turtles, and the made wonderful pets. I think that snapping turtles are greatly under appreciated and definitely fall into the category of the animals that nobody loves. I would appreciate any help that members from Kansas can assist or provide in the form of information or potential leads.

Thanks for reading,
C.T.

Re: Alligator Snapping Turtles in Kansas

We have three snappers one that is 2 years old and the other two are last year's hatchlings. I personally don't really care for them, but for some reason my husband has taken a shine to his snappers...

Re: Alligator Snapping Turtles in Kansas

I love snapping turtles! I've had mine for over three years now and got him when he was about 2-3 inches big, he's going on 11-12 now. But, I'm in WI so I can't be too much help.

Re: Alligator Snapping Turtles in Kansas

I have proof that there are alligator snapping turtles in Kansas. Just about a week ago now I walked out my side door and saw a little turtle standing in my breezeway. I thought it was just a regular snapping turtle until I did some research. The three ridges are blatantly apparent and the little guy is still only about 1-1.5 in shell. About 3 in head to tail tho. I don't know where the nest would have been, or even how old "Vin Diesel" (sweet name for him) is. But being that I'm living in Riley, Kansas, which is surprisingly far north for what the listed region is for alligator snapping turtles, I'd assume that he did in fact come from a nest in Kansas. My best guess would be the nearby Milford lake but I don't think Vin made the 20 mile hike.
