Good news and very bad news.

Good news: I don't know if I have ever talked about this. Many months ago, I lost my first turtle, Jimmy, while I took him outside on the grass to get some excersize (I didn't know much about turtles back then). I watched him very closely. I looked at my watch to check the time, and when I looked at Jimmy, he was gone. I figured he couldn't have gone too far, for he was pretty slow back then. I searched everywhere, I even dug up the backyard. I figured I would never see him again...
Yesterday, as my father was going to work in the morning, he spotted a strange moving "rock". He looked at it closely, and saw it was a turtle. He called me, remembering my depression when I had lost Jimmy. I came, looked at it, and instantly remembered it was my baby Jimmy. I washed him, for he was covered in dirt. He had not grown, he's still exactly 1 1/3 inches. I figured he had hibernated. I put him in a separate tank, then showed the other turtles to him. I put Jimmy in the main aquarium with the other turtles, and he is now eating. Yay, Jimmy!

Bad news: Sunny, as you may have known, had pneumonia. We gave her the proper medical attention, but has died yesterday morning, shortly before Jimmy was found.

I am a strong believer in God, so I believe Jimmy has come back, only that God has put part of Sunny's soul in Jimmy.

Jimmy, now called Jimny, is doing great right now. He's mighty smaller than the rest of the turtles, I'll post some pictures when I take some good ones.

That is good news and bad news. Maybe you have the best of both now.

Re: Good news and very bad news.

good to hear you found Jimmy! I would suggest getting a fecal or whatever kind of tests they run on turtles. Just to be sure that he didn't pick up anything while he was out...

Re: Good news and very bad news.

You really should put the turtle in a quarantine tank, if he was out this long he had to have eaten something, and god knows what it was and what it was infested with. Keep him separate until he passes a fecal float test.

He has had a fecal test, it seems alright. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Good news and very bad news.

Its sad to hear of your loss, but wonderful to hear about your gain...

When I was very little my dog died, and this is what my grama told me:

"With every great loss, God opens a door, to a new chapter of life. Loss gives us strength, and with strength, we learn to love, cherish and respect the ones we have left."

I find it very comforting, I hope you do too

Re: Good news and very bad news.

really, you should separate him for a minimum of 30 days. You don't even have to keep him in a fancy tank. A rubbermaid tub with some water and a lamp would do fine.

Re: Good news and very bad news.

Let me get this straight.
You found him, washed him, showed him the other turtles and immediatly put him in a tank with them?
You should NEVER introduce a new animal into an existing group without a MINIMUM of 30 days quarantine!
You may have just introduced disease and parasites to your other turtles!
Exactly when in this sequence of events did you have the fecal done?
What do you mean by "it seems alright"?"
A fecal test is either clear or it isn't.
