Looking to Adopt?
Hi -
I'm currently the proud mommy of a baby gecko, but have lots of turtle experience...since I acquired a very large tank, I've been interested in adopting 2 female box turtles. The trouble is, I haven't found a place to adopt from! I feel bad buying babies when there are adults that need a home for the 2nd half of their lives.
Does anyone know of a (reputable) adoption center in Michigan? I've tried a few places, but not gotten any response.
Thanks!
Anna

Re: Looking to Adopt?
You can try... petfinders.com to look up shelters in your area.

Re: Looking to Adopt?
check craigs list in the pet section. There always seems to be herps in need, at least in the baltimore area.
craigslist: michigan jobs, housing, for sale, personals, services, community, and events

Re: Looking to Adopt?
It's hard for me to look on craigslist. I see so many entries where the owner is trying to get rid of an animal like an iguana, and is consistantly listing horrible care for it. I want to take them all just so they'd have good care, but I don't have the room!

Re: Looking to Adopt?
luckily for me, most of the herps up for adoption on craiglist in my area have been well cared for and are for sale by breeders or someone who loves it but just doesnt have the room anymore

Re: Looking to Adopt?
That is fortunate. I just saw two today that had iguanas being kept in 20g-40g glass tanks "and have been for four years!" The pictures of the tank they're giving away (because they've just gotten a new huge 55g tank, which proves they are taking good care of it), or the poor little ig they want to give away in his tank, show just how inadequit the care so far has been. Makes me really angry.

Re: Looking to Adopt?
the north american reptile breeders convention was in two a week ago. In the last week I've seen soooooo many reptiles on Craigslist. It's killing me! Geckos, snakes, turtles..... poor animals..

Re: Looking to Adopt?
people should take a test before they have a pet... or children in some cases. we definately need some way to regulate it. Maybe you guys could make tests for breeders who actually care so they can make sure their babies are going to a new home

Re: Looking to Adopt?
Thanks for the input - I'll check out craigslist - I will probably want to adopt everything from the sounds of it - my gecko was an adoption, too - broken leg and no tail and barely even 2.25 inches long when I adopted him! He was so skinny and sad looking, but is a fat happy baby now!

Re: Looking to Adopt?
I don't know what kind of box turtle you're looking for, but in some states it's illegal to keep native box turtles unless you are a licensed wildlife rehabber. (I'm in VA and I think that's the case here.) But there are other species (like ornate box turtles, I believe) that would be legal even in those states. Just my coupla' pennies' worth, in case you wanted to check on your state's laws before you adopt.
