for keeping him around the pond, you need to build a little fence so he stays inside. I would also suggest putting a fence top on it as well, to keep out raccoons.
I'm not sure about the winter. You may have to take them inside and put them in a tank.

A 55 gallon tank (preferably 75 or larger) with no lid or a wide-gridded lid; a self-ballasted mercury vapor light approximately 100-150 watts; a powerful water filter with minimal noise and turbulence; a water dechlorinating agent; a basking platform of some sort; and a varied but healthy diet will be required for winter housing if you don't intend to hibernate.
Hi.
I have two painted turtles in a good sized pond outside. It is deep enough for them to hibernate over the winter and it is 3-4 feet deep. Having a good fence is inportant. I have one smaller painted that gets through. We have no idea how but for better of for worse he heads for the snapping turtle pond. It is really interesting. He has gotten out at least 5 or more times now and he still gets to the snapper pond. I don't know if that is a refuge or a death sentance but he heads over there. I think that painted turtles and sliders can live in the same conditions since I can find both species in the local pond so I have been referring to painteds. Hope that helps.
