Good grief!
And it is my understanding from the days of the dime store painted turtles that the paint clogs up the shell and causes problems. Not sure how you would go about getting it off though. Maybe a wire brush?

Re: Speedy The RES
I looked up my box turtle on Pennsylvania's Fish and Game website and it said that if you release one in the wild not to paint the shell! Too funny, people must do it often if they have to tell you not to do it!

Re: Speedy The RES
I'd caution you not to keep the turtle, unless you want to get a large aquarium and all of the other items required to keep it. It does look like a red-eared slider, which loves to swim and is pretty aquatic overall - it isn't fair to keep him in a backyard with only a puddle to soak in.

Re: Speedy The RES
Yup, I am aware of what they need, had several before and I am working on his aquatic area now.

Re: Speedy The RES
No, I dont know that I will. I'm sure the paint wont hurt him but I dont want to put any chemicals on the shell either...not sure what to do. It seems to be wearing off a bit it self so far.

Re: Speedy The RES
did you try soaking it in a wet cloth? just water? If its already wearing off, it sounds like latex. I would think an oil based would already have killed him. Soak it in water and try to give it a good scrub.
