    Live Plants with Anoles?

The owner at the petshop suggested live plants for my anoles.. I think that would be great to do, expecially once I get a larger tank for them... live plants are generally cheaper than fake, look better, and have the added benefit of providing oxygen. The petshop owner also said she thinks that the animals know the difference too, and she thinks they prefer the live plants as well.

What are some good plants to use for anoles?

What kind of substrate will I need to plant them in?

    Re: Live Plants with Anoles?

Unless you plan to purchase the plants from a resource (online or in person) who sells them specifically for vivariums, you have to clean all of the soil off of the roots. Then use organic potting soil. I have always found it easier to re-pot the plants rather than growing them directly in the enclosure.
Liz's advice to another member, "I get all my plants at lowes. Stay away from the plants with the fur, spikes and anything red. Just wash all the leaves and roots out. You should be fine. The frogs won't eat the plants, so there isn't too much to worry about. " The same is true for anoles.

so put them in like a terra cotta pot with organic soil? .. that sounds better. much easier to remove the plant when you need to clean the tank.

I plan to get live plants when I find them a larger tank... I called my older brother last nite and put a bug in his ear that Im looking for something that is 20-30 gallon size. He's resourceful at finding such things.

I have a tall 30 gallon from Craig's list-$20. If you post in the "wanted" section you may have the best luck. If you have "Free-cycle" in your area I would post there too. I scored a 3ft long tank for free!

    Re: Live Plants with Anoles?

For Green Anoles, the best plants are broad-leafed varienties like Diffenbachia. They Anoles love to rest on the leaves and bask. They also provide numerous hiding places for them. This is especially important if you have more that a single Anole in the enclosure.
One of the advantages of using a potting soil or compost substrate is that you should never have to feed your plants (fertilizers are a REAL problem for Anoles).
Natural plants also increase humidity in the enclosure and generally look better.
