    Grey Tree Frogs Breeding???

... between my females???? I have had these frogs since tadpoles that I rescued in the summer of 2008. Never heard any calling and never saw any 'action', before now...

About a month or so ago, the 4 frogs did a mini-hybernation thing. They have done this before (no schedule) - where they will all bury themselves in the soil for a week or two. They come back up when I water the plants in the tank. Not sure why they do it - there was never any temperature change in their tank.

Anyway - this last time, 2 didn't come back up. I found one dead and haven't located the other one. So I set up a new tank, with paper towels for the remaining two to keep an eye on them.

WELL... I saw more than I wanted to see this morning They were definitely in a position that 2 supposedly female frogs should not be in... and true to the female gender, the one on the bottom was facing the magic food dish, and she kept trying to eat a roach through the glass...

Is it possible that this one Grey Tree Frog has been maskerading as a female this whole time and just now has discovered the 'joy' of being male? Or do females get bored and do weird things on occasion?

WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS TO ME????

I know that in some species of fish, females in the absence of males can change their sex. Not sure about frogs though.

Or they just like to mess with YOUR head!

    Re: Grey Tree Frogs Breeding???

It didn't look like a frog pile to me....

I told you I had pictures....

...even the little roach was enjoying the show...

So - frog pile or mating maneuvers?

BTW: They are still at it.... the one on top has a death grip around the bottom one's neck

    *sigh*

yep, that's a mating grip alright. I no nothing about how long it takes these guys to mature and call. Maybe they don't do it till year 2?

    Re: Grey Tree Frogs Breeding???

LOL! You are all right -- my critters LOVE to help push me down that slipperly slope towards insanity!!

K - I'm supposed to be happy about this, because I've always wanted to have a boy GTF so I can have the chirping.... all I can say, he better chirp this spring, or I'll... um.... do something!

Now, another question - how long are they supposed to stay locked in this 'love' embrace?? They are still there as of this morning!

Last night before I went to bed, the little boy bugger had his eyes closed like he was taking a nap and the poor female on the bottom had her eyes bugging out like a volkswagon!!!!

Should I just leave them alone or separate them?

    *sigh*
