Should She Own a Tree Frog?
My mother-in-law loves frogs. She's decorated her whole house with them. So, when I let my son's raise baby gray's from tad's she said she wanted one. She had us buy her everything she needs. Then she came over (they are about a inch now) and I asked if she would like to see one. (we don't hold them on a regular bases, and we always wash our hands thoroughly before and after. For those of you who were about to say something.)
Anyway she about died, she had never touched a frog or toad in her life. She was born and raised in the country. I finally got her to let me set the frog on her arm, and she freaked out. Now I'm concerned. I know that she could wear glove, and that she won't need to touch them much. Even so what if she opens the cage to feed and he jumps out. That's happened to me many times. If she reacts like she did she could step on him or something.
Am I being over concerned or not, I am over once a week to help with clean up and stuff. But what about day to day? One of my frogs likes to hop on my arm every time I stick it in there ( I better not give her that one!)

Re: Should She Own a Tree Frog?
I had the same dilema with my daughter in law she wanted to take one of my hand raised cockatiels I put on on her shoulder and she freaked, so I just said NO because the bird would be left in the cage all the time and not let out (which is one of my pet hates) and the safety and welfare of the animal should be you main concern.

Re: Should She Own a Tree Frog?
Does she really STILL want to own one?
I think she should stick to ceramic frog decorations. It sounds like you'll have more headaches than anything else worrying about everything.
Good luck!

Re: Should She Own a Tree Frog?
You could always let her hold yours every time she comes over and see if things get any better. If she doesn't ever calm down then just explain to her that you don't think it would be a good idea, and explain why. I think if you paint the picture of them possibly jumping out and her accidentally stepping on it, she would agree. And if she starts to hold yours more often she might form a bond with one in particular and it may end up being more of a calm one...

Re: Should She Own a Tree Frog?
I would insist that she make a point of coming over to help with feeding the frogs, cleaning the tank and just anything regarding basic husbandry.
Many people will see something and want it just because they like the look, working under the assumption that all you have to do is to put it in a cage and forget about it!

Re: Should She Own a Tree Frog?
I agree with Merlin and Shell. There are times where she WILL have to handle it. She could wear latex gloves, but really, that's not a great solution, because as you noted, they sometimes like to hop out on their own.
Have her help with cleaning and feeding, and if she STILL can't hold them, I don't think its the pet for her.

I agree if the animal scares you, well you can't really have it as a pet. It would be like giving my mom a snake for Christmas!

Re: Should She Own a Tree Frog?
Or, maybe go to a swamp and catch a pond frog and let her get use to that. They usaly hop lots and red eyes and more trees don't go too crazy on the hoping.
