Just Bought Three Whites
Hello. Me and my misus have just today bought three juvenile whites. They are housed in an exo terra viv 24 x 18 x 24. I have used coconut fiber lined with moss on half of the floor and gravel and water on the other half. I have also got a water filter and a couple of big fake plants in there too. On the back wall is the regular fake wall that comes with the vivs.
Before anyone says "whoa not that much water", we have placed in a few fishes too! there are plenty of places for them to get out of the water and there is a sloped ramp as it leads to the "land" side of the tank, so they can get their bodies in so they are just right.
I have placed in a 60 watt daylight bulb and I also have a reptiglo UV tube in there.
Currently they're only feeding on pinhead crickets, but as soon as they get a little bigger they'll be on some other juicy stuff.
Unfortunately, i dont have any pics of the viv at the minute, but as soon as I get some taken I will add a thread with them inside.
So, what do you make of the description I have given?

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
Welcome to the board!
First and foremost you want to get rid of that moss. There is a good chance they will ingest some while hunting crickets. The stringy nature of that moss can cause it to wrap around intestines, cutting off blood circulation.
What is your temp and humidity? Do you have a digital gauge to read this?
I would worry about the fish. Not only will they be lunch some day, but there is a good chance they could be carrying something icky that could harm the frogs. There is also a chance your frog will drown in something so deep that you can have fish. They aren't the best swimmers, even if you have things for them to climb onto and a slope. They would benefit much more with an all land set up and a water dish.
Do you have some cross branches they can hang out on? That is a nice size tank, but remember to fill up the empty space with living space!

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
Hi!
Temps - Temps are running at 30 celcius during the day, measured both at the top and bottom of the viv. Not sure on night temps yet.
Humidity - Waiting on a hygrometer or however you spell it to be delivered. But, i have slight condensation on the glass so I would guess that humidity is relatively on the dot.
Plenty of climbing things for them. Got a reptile jungle thing thats like a plant with loads of long branches that stretch all over the viv. Got another false plant that comes from the water up.
The frogs tend to stay clear of the water, but if they do go in, which has hapened about 3 times, they either grab the plant or walk up the glass.
The water is about 3 inch deep and the fishes are small tropical just neons and some other glow type things.
I am looking at getting some more plants in there and some thickish vines. Want more stuff coming up and out of the water.
Also, if I seem to read some threads right, i am sure I have seen that there are 2 types of moss and that one is ok whereas the other isnt. Is this true? Or is all moss bad?
Because of the water I was thinking of creating a feeding tank for them. That way I can monitor what they eat instead of the little pin heads finding some litle hiding place somewhere and some poor frog going hungry.
One last question. How fast do they tend to grow? ie how much on average per month?

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
Welcome to the Boards!! As Liz will tell you soon enough, ALL MOSS IS BAD!!! No matter what they claim. Eco-Earth (coco-husk) is the best. Would love to see some pix sometime. Sounds like a very neat setup!!

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
Welcome!
Some moss is ok, it's the green stuff that is live and if you can get it to grow in your tank it's fine. Think of the moss you see growing on the ground in the shade or on the side of rough textured buildings, rocks even. This stuff isn't stringy, and generally because it is live and rooted can't accidentally get in the frog's mouth.

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
Hello.
I think I have done this right but here are the pics of the viv.
I have removed all the moss.
I am getting some vines, but as you can see, its looking pretty cool to me!

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
the whites are in there, they're hiding! 2 on top of the background (won't be able to go there when they are a little older ha ha) and 1 in the bushy plant on the right.

Re: Just Bought Three Whites
I would do some research to see if its OK for the frogs to eat the tetras. I know they can eat guppies. The fish WILL become lunch some day.
Get a hygrometer. If you have condensation, its probably too moist. You want to aim at 60 - 70%. You can get a digital temp/hygrom at lowes, home depot, walmart for under $10. I just picked one up at wal mart in the hardware section for $7. Works great.
You could use another cross branch up in that right hand corner. It's awfully empty.
As for feeding, I feed in a 5 gallon home depot bucket. Perfectly safe as long as that's all you use the bucket for. This allows me to be sure all my frogs are eating healthy.
Shell had it right about the moss. The alive, growing moss with roots is fine. The spanish moss is the terrible stuff.
Otherwise you are looking good. Your temps are nice and right. If your light is the only heat source and you turn it off at night, your temp drop is good as long as your house isn't below 21 C.
