American Tree Frog Question
This morning we got up to mist our tank and our frog, Froggy Frog, was jumping all over the tank. I noticed its belly is swollen, more round, and it was acting as if it were drunk (for lack of a better way of describing it). I wet the tank, moss, ground covering really well and have it in a warm spot to see if this will help. It has been eating - haven't fed it today as we have to go get crickets but it ate the others we put in a day or so ago. I read Kazoo's post and looked at the pics and that is kind of how our frog looks. We've always used bottled water on it so I don't think that is the problem but any ideas or suggestions would help. This is my 3 yr old's frog and we hate to lose it so soon (only had it 3 weeks). Thanks!
PS - I can tell it's not constipated as I can see where it pooed in the corner of the tank.

Re: American Tree Frog Question
Tell us about his setup, we can probably help you out but we need more information. Substrate, temps, humidity, foliage, type of water (spring, purified, etc..), diet, lighting and size of enclosure.

Re: American Tree Frog Question
We have it in a 5 gallon tank. The flooring is a mulch type flooring (sorry I don't have the exact name but it expanded once we got it wet), we have plants in a corner and a thick tree like branch going from one corner in the back to a corner in the front. There is also humidity moss in 3 corners that we mist daily. We just bought a thermometer that measures temp/humidity and right now the temp is 74 and humidity is 93%. I use bottled spring water to mist it or fill its water bowl. It is fed 2-3 live crickets every other day and seems to eat well. We have a small desk lamp over the tank that seems to keep it warm enough.
Some things we've done since this morning:
1. Wet the entire flooring, refilled water bowl.
2. Covered 1/2 of the lid with plastic wrap to keep moisture in.
3. Put it in a dark corner of the garage so it would warm up (brought it back in after 30 minutes or so).
4. Put two crickets in its cage.
We left for a few hours, came home and its belly was still a little swollen. But I swear, in 5 minutes its belly was almost back to normal. It's stuck to the wall of the tank right now just looking around. I'll try to take pictures to post. The ones I took earlier weren't very clear.
Thanks for any suggestions or ideas.

Re: American Tree Frog Question
93% is WAY too high for humidity. You want to aim around 60%. That substrate is good.
I think your tank is too small. He is going to need as a minimum a 10 gallon. The idea is to have a lamp on one side so its warmer on one side than the other. That way if the temp is too high, he can get away, or he can warm up if he feels cold. A simple 15 watt light bulb may be all you need. Its impossible to keep this gradient in a tank that small.
Ditch the moss. It can cause impaction of the intestines if they accidentally eat it. The Coco-fiber (substrate you have) is all you need and is the best choice.
Look at your water to be sure its spring water, and not something treated by chlorine.
Its possible its puffing itself out to make it look bigger. Remember, to him you are a predator.
I hope this helps.

Re: American Tree Frog Question
OK, how do I get it lower? Remove the plastic wrap?
Cute story, my son has a huge moon night light. Just went in to check on Froggy Frog and it is stuck to the side of the tank staring at it (the moon that is).

Re: American Tree Frog Question
Yup, just take off the plastic wrap. I have a 20 gallon, no plastic and it sits at about 55%. You could try just taking off some of the plastic to start, until you get the right combination.

Re: American Tree Frog Question
Thank you! We also bought it a larger water bowl and hope that will help as well.
