Green Tree Frog with Sagging Bottom Lip
Hi all can anyone please help me with my little frog Ribbit He was ok as a baby but now he has developed a sagging bottom lip I found him with his tongue poking out and I put it back in but now he just sits there with what looks like his tongue is too big for his mouth .He is active but I am hand feeding him cos I am not sure he can catch crickets, even though he tries to

Re: Green Tree Frog with Sagging Bottom Lip
A picture would help out a lot. Sorry you and your frog have to go through this.
To start you'll need to answer some questions.... What size tank? What kind of frog?....oh Green Tree frog Is he housed alone? What are the temps and humidity for day and night? What do you have in the cage(substract, hides, plants)? What are you using for light and heat? Do you ever dust his crickets? Do you treat his water? ![]()

Re: Green Tree Frog with Sagging Bottom Lip
Thanks for your replies, he lives in a 2ft tank with another green tree frog and a green golden bell frog, the temp is between 74 and76, the humidity I dont know because I dont have a gague,I mist the tank once or twice a day,There are rocks, plants and logs in the tank,I heat it with a heat pad cos that is all I have at the moment and I have a uvb light which is on for approx 7 hours a day.I feed the crickets gutload and once a week I use Calcium Sandoz liquid in an eye dropper and put one drop on their backs. They only have spring water in the bowl they sit in Last night I put him in a vase lined with moss and put in 4 mediun sized crickets and he caught them all by himself. I am thrilled with that, atleast I know he can catch them.He is sitting in his vase next to me now chasing them. I have read about metabolic bone disease and from the articles I have read they say it can be fixed,I dont know how he could have got it though

Re: Green Tree Frog with Sagging Bottom Lip
I have no clue about those drops. Never heard of them before. Go out and get yourself a jar of t-rex calcium plus D vitamin powder. Dust your crickets once a week. (Do this by placing them in a ziplock baggie with a pinch of powder and shake.)
2nd, get rid of that moss pronto. It has been known to cause impaction. For substrate pick up a brick or two of shredded coconut husk, it expands in water. You said you have plants? What do you have for substrate. Potting soil is ok as long as its the organic kind. For a hospital tank like your vase, rule of thumb is damp paper towel for substrate. 3rd, mixing species is usually a big no-no. Plus that Golden bell frog could use a bigger tank. He's one of Australia's largest ground frogs. He will get big enough and eventually EAT your green tree frogs anyway. I would suggest nothing smaller than a 20 long tank for him. The bigger the better. What strength UVB bulb do you have? They are usually marked by number, ie 2.0, 5.0, 10.0

The moss is not in the tank I only put it in the vase for a soft base for him to sit on. The plant is in a pot and the tank has rocks for the base(not small enouth to eat. The green golden bell frog is smaller than the tree frogs but I will keep it in mind.He was also living with a tiny ewing frog and never tried to eat him The calcuim sandoz is a liquid calcium that is absorbed directly into the skin.I have a powder called Reptile Suppliment calcium powder that I dust the crickets in each night
Sorry I have a no 5 globe |

Re: Green Tree Frog with Sagging Bottom Lip
OK, here is your problem. Too much calcium has the same effect as not enough. Every night for dusting is way too much. Dust once a week, get rid of the drops all together.
Your golden bell should reach 4 inches, if he doesn't its not a golden bell! And just because he didn't try to eat him *yet* doesn't mean he won't ever. Just be warned, you may be down a frog in the future. If you do plan on keeping them together, which I still don't suggest, you will need a bigger tank. One that is tall. There is a 37 gallon that works great for tree frogs. Its the same footprint at a 29 gallon only taller. I currently keep 3 red eye tree frogs in that tank. Your saving grace with keeping them together is they have the same temp and humidity requirements. You just need to give them more space to call their own.

Re: Green Tree Frog with Sagging Bottom Lip
Thanks Liz Do you think the problem will fix itself? My green golden bell is 2yrs old and would only be about 2 and a half inches so maybe he isnt one. I will be investing in a bigger tank eventually but at the moment they have plenty of room to hop around
