Sick WTF

We have 2 Whites Tree Frog's. The newest we just bought over a month ago from a reptile swap. He was very healthy, active, eating well, climbing, in and out of water. About 4 days ago he stopped eating, laying around in same spot, very lethargic, becoming skinny. What's up with our little guy?

Re: Sick WTF

It would probably help you get some answers if you gave us all you can about him, what size is his enclosure, the temps, substrate, what you feed him, etc.

Re: Sick WTF

If we can answer your question we will, but we need a few more details about the little guy. Temps, humidity, lighting, size of enclosure, substrate, plants and what you feed him.

Is he with your other frog, or by himself?

Sick WTF Continued

Here is the info that everyone was asking about my sick white tree frog. He is 3" long and 1 1/2" wide, a few white spots on him with no sign of the red leg. He stays in a 20 gallon long fish tank with his sister who is very healthy. Ambient temperature between 74 and 80. Critter bark is on the floor of the tank. He has some fake plants and fake tree limbs to climb on. No lights on him not by the window. There is some moss on the ground that I keep moist that he likes to sleep under. They get misted twice a day with dechlorinated water. There is a shallow water bowl that they go in at night, water changed every 2 days. They eat every 2 days either crickets, mealworms, or small chunks of nightcrawlers, covered with vitamin powder once or twice a week. We have had him for a little over a month. He was not initally seperated from his sister, but he was very active, climbing, playing in water, eating well, changing colors like his sister. In the last 5 days he has stopped eating, no climbing, become thin, lazy and lethargic. He has been seperated from his sister. I have access to any kind of medication I need. Thanks for any help you guys can provide. A vet is also available if needed. I added some pictures, I hope I did it right.

Re: Sick WTF

A few things to change. The repti-bark and moss needs to go. If eaten by your frog it will cause impaction.

I'd take him to a vet. There is a chance he is impacted. Everything else sounds pretty good.

You need to upgrade that tank though. 20 gallons is big enough for one frog, not two. Minimum 29 gallon tall tank. They are arboreal, so long tanks don't work for them.

Re: Sick WTF

I'd up the temps 80-85.
If your temps arn't high enough and you mist the tank it will lower the temps even more and take longer for the what you misted to dry.....which could cause bacteria in your tank....and make your frog sick.

(IMO)You should seperate the 2 frogs(put the sick frog in a clean tank on paper towel with a hide and water dish)........and clean their tank out top to bottom.

I've had luck of clearing up a bacterial infection with Mela-fix.
Just in case that's what's wrong with your frog here are the instructions........
Quote:
MELA FIX INSTRUCTIONS:

This is the instructions for using Mela fix....It can be purchased at any /fish/pet shop in the fish supply section and some walmarts..... Its also available on line...

Please only use this once talking to other experienced keepers.....Its not a cure all...

Its an antibacterial and works as a natural antibiotic and anti-fungul... It does help with some parasites but not all..
If things are caught early it can do wonders....

Mela Fix use instructions

Its an all natural medicine (made with tee tree oil).

You use it at 1/2 the dosage on the bottle (that goes for any meds for the frogs that are meant for fish).
Its very strong.

1) I measured 4 ounzes of de-chlorinated/treated water.
2) I warmed it in the microwave for 15 sec., just to barely warm it. (use a ceramic dish)
3) Then I took a toothpik and dipped it in the mela-fix twice and stirred the water. You should just be able to smell it in the water.
4) Then I got my frog and made him sit in for only 1 minute.
5) Then hold him to dry and place back in his tank.

Repeat this for 7 days.

This can be repeated only after a 2 week break in between.

Also if frog is small tip some water away after adding Mela Fix... They should be able to sit comfortably..

The frog should be dipped when quiet and at the same time each day or close to....The less stress the better...

But please print off for your files.

Re: Sick WTF

melafix is a great medicine, but be wary of where you live. it is considered a carcinogen and there are restrictions on it in california. make sure if you use it to wash your hands very carefully, and dont use it near anything you will eat or ingest in any way. good luck!

Re: Sick WTF

I agree with the possible impaction especialy if you just drop crickets in and let them eat. They get everything stuck in those mouths with that tongue. I also agree on uping the temps, they should be around 85 as said.

Re: Sick WTF

A warm(not at all hot) bath might help too. But I'm not sure you can get a frog to sit still long enough.
