Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
This all started with a ten gallon tank, a screen lid I was given for free, and alot of extra expanding coconut substrate lying around.
I had the tank lying around, my mom had seen it at a yard sale for $2, with dirt, a very cheapo lid, and a small feeding dish in it, i ditched the dirt and the lid, and was used for at temporary reptile, but other than that had it just laying around for months. So about 2-3 weeks back someone gives me a White Spotted Wall Gecko, along with a 10 gallon tank and a decent screen lid. So I fix up the gecko's tank, buy him a heater, the 3for the price of two expanding substrate package, and fun stuff for his tank. I put the lid from when I first had my Schneiders Skink on it(My Skink was in a ten for a little, i had to buy a lid to keep him from escaping till I got the twenty long, and had it set up) and once I had it set up back in his tank he goes. (This is going somewhere)
So now I have a tank, a lid, and substrate, along with a spot in my room that would be perfect for a ten or a twenty tall. So I decide to start another tank, finally deciding on tree frogs. I go out to the store, and end up buying a whole bunch of fake plants, vines, a shallow pool, and one of those tank toppers that essentially adds a ten gallon tank on top of your 10 gallon, but is open air. So Now I have ,in my opinion, A awsome looking enclosure. But no frogs in it. So At first it was going to be green tree frogs, because of the cost and I wouldnt need a heater, now i'm debating a more interesting specie of frogs, Maybe a type of monkey frog, or another, brighter, type of tree frog maybe.
I really want Red Eyed tree frogs, but I can't spend $50 to $60 a frog, so if anyone has any ideas, or maybe somewhere I can buy red eyes for signifigantly less maybe, i would love to hear it. I would also like everyone's opinion on my setup, (sorry the pictures were taken on a cell phone camera) and about how many frogs would be the optimum number in a tank (I say optimal in regards to overall health, stress, animal wellbeing, not the maximum, in japan they got 22 people in one four door car, in no way is that the optimal way to drive it)
Sorry about the long, and rather drawn out story, And thanks for any help I can get.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
I would suggest NOT getting red eyes for your first setup. They are much more delicate than green tree frogs.
There is a very big problem with your setup for frogs. Frogs need humidity. Your set up is filled with fake plants and a screen top. They will shrivel up and die in a matter of a week. Especially the red eyes. They come from Costa-Rica where it is very humid most of the time. Most frogs also need heat. They need to be kept in the 75 to 80 range and that screen top won't hold the heat in either.
That set up won't work for any frog out there, minus this one frog that lives in the african desert and only needs water once every other week. But they are about $150 each and very hard to find, so don't push your luck.
before you go out and get some frogs, please read these caresheets. You will find out more about their needs. Figure out what frog you want FIRST, then build an enclosure that would suit them.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
thank you for your feedback, I did do a bit of research, The tank is not 100% complete, i plan on purchasing a fogger before I get the frogs, and I will be placing plexiglass around the back and two sides of the metal grate (which may turn into all four sides depending on how the humidity reads after a 48 hour period) . I've been watching the tank, and until I have it perfect I do not plan on purchasing any frogs for it. thank you for the advice though. other than closing up the 3-4 sides of the metal grate, and adding a fogger, would you have any other tips on the tank.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
stay away from foggers. They give off very little humidity and can shock an animal. Hand misting with a spray bottle twice a day is usually sufficient.
And from having built a few enclosures, you will need to cover every side in plexiglass and part of the top. By the time you buy all that plexi, you might have well bought a 29 gallon tank. Check out craigs list, you can usually find one for about $20.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
thank you for the advice. after spending all this money on extra stuff, suppose I may as well shell out a bit more for a full glass tank. I could always put the tank topper on my gecko's cage, he'd love the extra space.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
After looking at it, i'm kind of curious what you think it would take (other than of course a heat pad and a UVB light to make this enclosure great for green anole's. The tank's grown on me.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
green anoles are semi-tropical so they need temperature of 70-80 and humdity of 70%. almost impossible in that tank. what are the dimensions of it? perhaps it could be good for a baby iguana or baby water dragon. They like screened enclosures

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
its only a 10 gallon with a 10 gallon tank topper, basicly a twenty tall.
Water dragons and iguanas's are out, were I to house anoles I would put plexi around 3 sides of the wire cage on top.

Re: Tree Frogs for my mini Rainforest?
iguanas also have high humidity needs,, and the size of that tank would last about a week for a baby iguana, lol. A minimum of 55 gallon tank is recommended for babies,, and they grow very fast. I also dont recommend wire cages for them unless you are going to sit there with a super soaker to keep the humidity up for them, lol.
Nevermind I just caught your no iguana thing, lol and the 10 gallon tank thing also. Liz a ten gallon is completely unsuitable for even a hatchling iguana,, there is no way to get the proper temperature gradients throughout it,, also iguanas do have a high humidity requirements. Trust me walking in my house is like walking in one of those tropical greenhouses at times, lol. Sometimes I think the whole sprinkler on the ceiling would be much much easier, lol
