Tortoise Diet Question

Another member asked for me to post this question so that our tortoise keepers can come up with some recommendations. I was able to answer part of the question, but I'll let the tortoise folks come up with a solution to this problem.

"I have recently been given a Russian Tortise. He's great but I have found that he loves green beans almost to the exclusion of anything else. He lives in my small townhouse backyard, has the run of the place. There is Bermuda grass and clover, some small flowers that he helps himself to occasionally, but mostly waits for green beans. Will this hurt him?"

A diet strictly of green beans would not be good. Calcium rich greens like collards, mustards, chicory, dandelions...are the standards with the other veggies mixed in....hope this helps...Lyn

Don't forget a good quality hay... alfalfa would be great.

I just thought of this, but have you tried simply not giving him green beans? Sounds to me like he's acting like a little kid and green beans are his candy. He's being a brat and refusing to eat anything but green beans, but if you take the beans away, he may get hungry enough to give in and eat a balanced diet. Also make sure you're using good vitamin and calcium supplements.

My Russian tort loves Yams, he gets a slice every night with collard or turnip greens. Occasionally we give strawberries, but not more than once a week.
