New to Torts

I'm an animal lover from Ohio who has had experience with exotic animals. I would really like to add a herp to my family and have found that tortoises appeal to me the most. I've decided to start doing research on the Russian Tortoise to see if this would be a good choice for me or not.

If you were recommending a good "starter" tortoise what would it be?

HI and Welcome to Herp Center... you can read about the Russian Tortoise here...
http://www.herpcenter.com/showthread.php?t=2727 they have certain care requirements, but I would recommend them as a first tortoise...anyone else. I myself have a sulcatta tortoise and they get really big compared to the Russians. Good luck and kudos to you for researching before purchasing/adopting....Lyn

Most of the European tortoises are good for newbies. I have a greek tortoise, which is very very adaptable, so if you make mistakes it will still survive. I moved across the country with toby, my greek, and he stayed healthy the entire way, sitting in a small shoe box. Russians are good for newbies, also, Like I said Greek tortoises, and the Margined Tortoise from what I understand is a good starter species. Margined tortoises do grow a tad bigger than the others. The Hermann's tortoise is a more maintinence species, but will also be alright for new tortoise lovers.

I have a russian and I can say that they would make a great starter, do your research first becuase with a tort size is a concern. I also have a red foot and a sulcata. Can't wait for the sulcata to grow up. lol
