Sulcata Winter Housing

I have an African Spurred Tortoise (Sulcata), he is about 7 years old and approximately 60-65 pounds. I have always kept him outdoors here in San Antonio. I have a large yard, about 1/2 acre and he enjoys all of it. He is not much of a digger but has several holes dug mostly under bushes that he uses in the summer months. In the winter, he roams the yard when weather permits and is in his Extra Large Dogloo when the weather turns cold or rain comes along. I rigged up a thermostat that I bought at PetSmart with a ceramic heat emitter. I bored holes through the dogloo to mount all of this and it has worked very well for years. I sometimes put hay in the dogloo when the weather is very cold and he kicks it up against the door to fill the gaps where cold air can enter around the flap. I keep the temp set at 70 degrees and he will adjust where he is positioned to regulate his body temperature since in cold weather the lamp is on most of the time. I will try to attach pics in the near future.

Re: Sulcata Winter Housing

That sounds neat, I'd love to see pictures. I kind of envy people who can keep large herps outside.

Re: Sulcata Winter Housing

I wish I could keep my Oscar outside! He now roams my house in a Depends diaper. He rules around here that is for sure, lol. I should not complain though, as long as you are at his beck and call every moment of the day he is happy, lol. I would love to see pics of your Sulcata!

Re: Sulcata Winter Housing

I was thinking about getting one and doing something similar with the dog house. Sounds like a great idea.
