Re: Rainwater

I think we need a little more info here??

If a tortoise was kept outside it COULD drink rainwater if there was an area that it had pooled up in....are you asking if it is OK to allow it to drink rainwater if it is outside? If the tortoise is outside, and it drinks some rain water, that is OK...but, I would certainly not rely on it as a source of water.

Re: Rainwater

as long as its fresh. I wouldn't leave a bowl out there for more than a day. Water will need changing daily. Will fresh rain water hurt them? No. Will stale rainwater that has been sitting around while bacteria breeds harm them? Yes.

Re: Rainwater

what are you storing it in? If yopu are using those big huge barrels, some of them release a toxic substance.

Re: Rainwater

Depends what's in the rain....some rain is dirty and gross. Is the rain running off of a dirty roof down a rusty gutter and into a barrel with stagnant water? Just think about everything it comes into contact with before it gets to the tort.

Would you drink it? If I wouldn't feel safe drinking it I wouldn't give it to my pet.

Re: Rainwater

are we talking about rain water collected, or rainwater that happens to rain on an outdoor enclosure?

Re: Rainwater

You can get an additive for collected rainwater that makes it safe to drink for human consumption. It needs to be filtered first though.

Re: Rainwater

sorry for not getting back to you guys, I was thinking of having an opening over the water dish in my outside pen for them so when it rains, it could fill the dish up. I would also add water daily, this is just a back up basically...

Re: Rainwater

I wouldn't suggest it. I would just stick to filling it daily. Better safe than sorry.
