Re: Scar (Desert Tortoise) is Sick :(

Well, I wish it was that neat of a story...but no, we named him that because he has a big nasty 'scar' on his shell from some sort of trauma in his early life. But I might use that story instead now...

Re: Scar (Desert Tortoise) is Sick :(

Well, yesterday was the first day that he really started moving around again...hopefully he will eat today!
The sad part of the story is that I completely FAILED at giving tortoise injections. Scar certainly was not an easy patient...the vet's even said that he was particularly stubborn about all of it, but I couldn't get his front leg pulled out to give the shot in the softer area in there. I mean, I could get it pulled out a little, but not enough and not with enough control to give the shot. He is one strong tort! I also tried standing him upright on his bottom like Nicole suggested so that he would flap his front legs around so I could grab one...he just sat there...never moved his head, his legs...nothing. Normally it would have worked perfectly, but he literally did not move or pull his head or legs out of his shell for several days straight...and no matter how I held him, he wasn't changing his mind. So, I ended up just taking him back to the vets and leaving him with them to do the shots. They did say that I could give the shot in the front of the leg if I couldn't get to the inside, but I was just not up for that. I tried that the first day, but you really have to jam that thing in there to get through that skin...I have never injected anything in my life, and I was just not comfortable doing that. I felt bad enough for him feeling so bad, the last thing he needs is an inexperienced, nervous person attempting and failing to jab needles into him! I just figured it was the right thing to do...even if it is a little embarrassing to admit that I am a big wimp and couldn't give the shot. So, that is where we are so far!! Today will be his 5th shot, so we are half way done

well, at least you didn't just give up and not go through with the treatment. I probably would have wussed out too.

Awww, well I am glad he looks like he may be on the way to recovery. I am sorry the shot thing didnt work out for you,, however I agree,, they are EXTREMELY strong, you have to get them pretty quick or they will manage to pull that leg away. Sometimes I compare it to sumo wrestling, because I know if I wrestled a sumo wrestler I would be just as exhausted, lol

Re: Scar (Desert Tortoise) is Sick :(

Talked to the vet a little bit ago, and Scar is eating and drinking like crazy! And he is back to being active and grouchy about being in a tub hahaha. So, he gets to come home on Friday!! Spent this past weekend working in the tortoise yards...it is so nice to have my tort's awake and following me around the yard again!! Gotta love this time of year!! When Scar comes home I will have to take new pictures of everyone to post
