sulcata tortoise
i live in n. az and I keep my sulcata tortoise out all summer until it starts to get cold then I bring him in. he sleeps all winter and I usually wake him up every week or so to feed him since they do not hibernate. does anyone let theirs sleep all winter without feeding wih good results?

Re: african tortoise
Sulcatas do not hibernate, mine eats everyday, several times a day, they are grazers, kind of like a cow. I have also put mine in the house for the winter as it is way too cold here. He roams my house, causes hate and discontent, then he basks under his uvb/heat light, eats, roams, and basks some more.
My first instinct is to think that yours is too cold. Do you have a uvb/heat light for him? also how big is he?

Re: african tortoise
i usually put a heater near him and then he comes out. the house is usually 65 70 degrees in winter. he is 9 years old and about 2ft by 2ft. i do not have a light on him though this would keep him awake. i have been doing this since he was a baby. how do you deal with his poop and pee. he can certainly leave quite a mess.

Re: african tortoise
He needs uvb lighting in the house during the winter. 65 or 70 is way too cold. If he is too cold his body will start to shut itself down,,, hence the no appetite, he needs somewhere to bask and stay warm.
as far as the poop, i have mine tub trained, he is 1 year younger than yours.
if he only eats once a week, his body will use all his reserves and eventually have some serious health issues.

boy Merlin, how true that statement is, lol. i am just an unworthy slave to Oscar as far as he is concerned
If you are worried about the light keeping him awake at night, use a ceramic heat emitter, or red light. These are not uvb lights and you need to make sure he has that too. It is extremely important! Pkease post some pics as I would love to see pictures of your roaming house destroyer, lol
If you are worried about the fecal mess,, which I would be, start putting him in he tub in warm water, that helps to stimulate things and hopefully he will learn to go in there. This will take time, but it can be done. i definately would not want something that size doing his business anywhere in the house. Thats like a cow messing in your house,,, yuck!!!!! lol
I cant stress enough the importance of heating him up and the uvb lights on him! Good luck and let us know how it goes
