Russian tortoise
Does anyone know what the max. size of a Russian Tortoise. They have had one at my favorite pet store for some time. It has been marked down three times, and no one has bought it. I'd like to get it only if it get's REAL big!

Re: Russian tortoise
It depends on what your version of "real big" is, They can reach a size of 9 to 10 inches long and the males seem to be a bit smaller. In my opinion that is a nice small sized tortoise, but then again I have a male sulcata who is like having a giant house destroying tank, lol.

Re: Russian tortoise
9 or 10 inches is too small for me. When I think of a tortoise, I'm Thinkin' Up to two feet. We get Snapper turt's bigger than that down here.

Re: Russian tortoise
then you are looking for something like a sulcata, but you really need to research to know what you are getting into, they are a lot of work and VERY expensive, lol

Re: Russian tortoise
You really shouldn't buy something just because it gets REAL big. You need to be prepared for when it is REAL big and you need to make arrangments for the tort after you are gone because it will undoubtedly outlive you if properly provided for.

Re: Russian tortoise
And stop and consider where you are going to keep a tortoise that gets as large as you are looking at. You are looking at a room sized enclosure.
And that enclosure will have to have the proper heat humidity and UVB lighting.
And a great deal of food!
We are getting into some serious money here.
