Tortoises Need Your Help!

An estimated 10 million tortoises were shipped into the UK for the pet trade between 1890 and 1984 before the initial ban was introduced. This trade is back! Tortoises are being imported in substantial numbers. However, DEFRA are failing to prevent this illegal trade and are in fact licensing it. These tortoises go through untold misery and often arrive here with chronic worm infestations and dehydrated, which far too often contributes to their early demise.

The Tortoise Protection Group (TPG) is campaigning for a ban on the importation of tortoises for the pet trade. Please help us keep tortoises in their natural environment by signing the TPG petition. Although many have a cynical view of online petitions, it ONLY takes a minute of your time to sign these, and it does show your support and that you care. People have changed the world by gathering support on issues. I hope you will all feel empowered and take a moment to speak up for the Tortoises as they cannot do it for themselves. This issue is different from most animals in the pet trade, as these days most animals are captive bred. These tortoise are being harvested from the wild! This kind of harvesting can have terrible effects on the population! Over 70% of turtle and tortoise species are listed as threatened and endangered. This is why simply showing your support is needed!

Unfortunately, online petitions really don't mean anything to the people on the recieving end, because programs can be made to sign hundreds of names at a time.

Do you have an address or email that we can write to personally, though? That would be a much better way to let them know we're against it.
