Tokays for christmas!!

I absolutely LOVE these big guys! They're fascinating... like dragons or dinosaurs...

Will be posting pics asap. Got two adult females, boy they're beautiful. One has a bad temper and barks and bites at my hand whenever I try to go near it. The other one is fine though, and she opens her mouth in protest but refrains from biting and running. She's sitting on my hand quite nicely actually...

I don't mind the biting really... I'll pick it up anyway....

Problems though...

My room temp is 71 F and they need about 85 F... I don't want lights on at night... already have a Under Tank Heater... and I have an 80 watt bulb to provide extra heat and a photoperiod, but after I turn it off at night I'm afraid it will get too cold.

I spray the whole enclosure twice a day and feed 3 times a week. They are full adult ad about ten inches long each.

Should I be feeding more often? How many crix should I put in the container for each gecko to have a good share?

more questions later.

Ceramic heat emitters and radiant heat panels are a good way to get temps up without being kept awake all night. Can't wait to see pics since I know so little about Tokay's

heat rock BAD! it always has a bad reputation (when you mean "cermaic heater" you do mean heat rock right?)It always has been said it will burn your reptiles
and also about how many crickets you put in it matters how many they'll eat and when the last time they have eaten my geckos can eat 5 or 6 if I froget to feed them one day so if they are adults I think maybe 3-5 but again I don't know much about tokays so if someone else posts something I suggest ya go with that

A ceramic heat emitter is not a heat rock . it fits into a domelamp just like alight bulb and emits heat without light. do your tokays eat infront of you or no? if they eat while your watching than count to see how many they'll eat at each feeding a few time and you should get a feel for how many you should give them, thats how I decide how many to give mine anyway.
how large is their tank?

Yet another example of the devastating effects of foot-in-mouth disease. It should be noted that foot-in-mouth is not usually fatal and easily preventable by only opening ones mouth when one knows what they are talking about and not otherwise One thing to keep in mind about ceramic heat emitters is that they get VERY hot and should only be used in ceramic dome light fixtures, not the standard plastic ones, because they will melt them. While these fixtures and the Ceramic Heat Emitter are a bit more expensive in the beginning they eventually pay for themselves because they are very long-lived.

Best tokay substrate and way to get them to "let go"?

well, I know they are arboreal. I WANT them to have a 29 gallon tall... i saw it at a little buds house where he keeps his afts and it looked perfect size. right now I have them sitting on my wooden trunk in a 20 gal long which is protected by doubled towels and blocks... (bc of the Under Tank Heater)

The ceramic heat emitter sounds great.

now I need substrate help. I think reptibark is too small for them to have bc of the way they gorge their food. they might swallow a piece and choke, impact, etc... and since their mouths are so big thats a problem.

whats non-toxic jungle substrate that doesn't get bacteria and bug problems and that holds high humidity levels well. I have the waterbowl thing, but I need a better way... i have them on repticarpet bc its the only thing I have right now, tomorrow im going to the pet store (closed on xmas) to get stuff... which substrate works best for tokays?

when I get bit, my uncle (who is a microbiologist) said to hold the animal underwater until it lets go, is this safe? i mean, tokays are the pit bulls of geckodom... and I can never get these little buggers off my skin without them taking a piece of me with them. are their safer ways? i fixed it once by using a hard plastic piece by sliding it between his mouth opening and then wiggled it lightly and he let go. but then he bit me again and he got a little piece of skin... so I had no way of even using a credit card to push through the gap...

thanks for the responses, and merry christmas to everybody!!

Soaking papertowels is a great way to keep humidity up and a safe way to keep your tokays safe. Though it does not look to well. I prefer using mosses for tokays mostly though. They hold humidity well and usually pack together better than sand and stuff. I know many people who own tokays and use repti bark without problems, and it holds humidity well.
