how long without food?
I got a new tokay and introduced him to his new environment where he didn't do much for a while. Eventually, after 3 days or so, he ate a few crickets I gave him. He is either small for a tokay or not full grown yet; he's about 10 inches in length.
Unfortunately I had to change around his tank a bit so I removed him into a box for an hour or so while I redid his environment. After I put him back in he doesn't really do much. He either hangs on the glass or stays on the ground, but doesn't move much. I saw him move a lot yesterday but he moved really clumsily and fell off the branches because he didn't seem to move very carefully. He has plenty of cover to hide in and stuff to climb on. Tanks is a 15H for now. I put crickets in his tank but as far as I can tell he hasn't touched them, so it's been about a week since he has last eaten. Temp's about 72-86 day and 68-74 night, humidity is 60-90%, which should be good conditions. Is he still getting used to his environment? Should I be worried that he's not eating? He seems to be drinking water off leafs and the glass. Christoph |

Re: how long without food?
how long has it been since you changed things around? if just a day or so then I think you can give him a little more time. As long as he isn't losing a lot of weight he should be ok.

Re: how long without food?
It's been maybe 3 days. He's been kinda skinny to begin with, but then I only have experience with Leopard geckos so I can tell by the thickness of their tail how skinny they are. He doesn't look too thin though.

Re: how long without food?
Yep,,,,he'll need time to adjust. I've had some herps for years and when I change the enclosure they seem to just shut down like I just brought them home. Give him time.

Re: how long without food?
Cool thanks
![]() Just remembered that he had shed in that week he didn't eat, so that probably explains while he didn't eat the first few days. It seems to be all crashing down on him ![]() |

Re: how long without food?
You shouldn't really leave the crickets running free in the tank, they can nibble on him. I know some people put them in a tall clear glass or vase and then he wouldn't really have to hunt, just climb into the dish.
You can do the same thing with some other foods for variety, silkworms, superworms, mealies, butter worms, wax worms are all okay food sources, limit the intake of the latter two though.

Re: how long without food?
Hm that glass thing is a good idea! I let them roam free in my leopard's tank, but he eats them all right away and they have nowhere to hide.
I was wondering how to best do this with my tokay because there is so much room to hide for them. I also enjoy watching him hunt, but maybe I should not, at least for a while or with all the crickets. Thanks! |
