Housing Tokays together?
Hi, I'm new to this community and I have a question about my tokay. I have an older female (Spartacus, yes I named her before I knew it was a she) that is roughly 8-9 inches long, and I'm transporting her to a larger cage. I also just recently purchased a baby tokay, bout 4 inches with tail. I want to house them together, but I afraid Spartacus will eat the new one. What do you all think? Spartacus has been alone for close to 8 months I would say. Any opinions?
-Daniel
*note: I just moved them both into a larger tank, which I think we be regarded as new territory. Correct me if I am wrong please!

i dont know much about tokays, but as a general rule I think if you're worried one might eat the other, then one might eat the other. i would keep them separate until they are closer to the same size.

Welcome to HC. I agree with D, you to go with you instint and house them seperately. The size is a big difference so wait till they are the same size.

I would definitely wait to introduce them until they are the same size. Tokays can be terretorial and down right mean to each other, i'd hate for you to find out the hard way that they don't get along.
Give the little guy some time to catch up.
Welcome to the HCN!

I much appreciate the advice you all have given me. Unfortunately, the younger one (just purchased yesterday) passed away today for reasons unknown. I treated it in a similar manner that I did my first one which was in accordance with a lot of the guides I have read on Tokay keeping. One thing I noticed was it was incredibly skinny. You could see the spine through the skin, but I'm not sure if it was malnourished or just really young. At the time of purchase, it was shedding. It may also have suffered from high stress levels, but I don't know. It was really cute, too...
The one that passed away was the smaller one. The larger one is Spartacus, and they were in a temp holding area.

This is going to sound odd, but would a 12" x 12" x 18" cage be suitable for Spartacus to reside in? Spartacus is roughly 9" long, and I've heard mixed reports. Thanks for the help!

I am not up to par on the enclosure requirements for a Tokay, but I can say with 100% certainty that the baby Tokay should never have been placed with the adult Tokay. Never should such a small animal be placed with something so much larger than it. To the smaller animal, the larger animal appears as a predator. Can you image the stress that poor little fella was feeling?

Unfortunately we won't know as the baby died on Saturday. I do apologize for my ignorance with lizards, as the larger tokay in the pic is the first one I have ever had. I learned that lesson the hard way.
*Addition: If I were to get an additional tokay (one of similar size), what are some precautions to take? I've heard quarentine, but any other bits of advice other owners can give?

The only precaution is to quarantine as stated and if you are getting one of smaller size, it MUST be housed seperately or you are going to get the same results as the first.
