question on FBT
hi everyone
I use to have a green fire-bellied toad, in with my newt. They got along and things were great until my fire-bellied toad escaped some how and was lost forever =( I was sad and confused as to how it got out! I want to get another one or two, but I don't want to lose them. Any suggestions on what to do? I really wanted to add them to my newt aquarium without having to setup (no space) more tanks right now. |

if you didnt have a cover on the tank, perhaps he climbed up and out....if they figure it out...it's inevitable....also it is not suggested to mix species together in the first place. Lyn

As pointed out do not mix most species ,many newts are toxic as are many toads and others, you must have a tight fitting lid even if the animal can not get out it prevents others from getting in ie house cat ect just my thoughts

I don't know about FBTs but i've had western toads brace themselves against a corner and climb up to the top of the tank, where they are met by a lid so they end up falling back down.

I'm not sure how your toad got out exactly, but as previously recommended, I wouldn't mix the two species anyway. The newt will require much cooler water temperatures than the toads will prefer. Plus, both species are toxic, and the toxins may affect each other. Not to mention the newt is solitary and the toad is communal. While the newt prefers to be left alone, Oriental fire-bellied toads prefer to live in small groups of about 6 toads.
