    Meal Worms???

    I am currently feeding my two Fire Belly Toads small crickets, but the crickets die in the cricket cage before we feed them to the toads too quickly. I was thinking about trying Meal Worms, but had a couple questions:

    1. Will it stress out the toads, changing the food?

    2. Where do I keep the Meal Worms? Can I keep them in the cricket cage? (I can't post pics of the cricket cage because my computer won't let me, but if you go to Petsmart.com and search Cricket Cage, I have that cage.)

    3. Also, when I put the Meal Worms in the Toad cage to feed them, should I put the Meal Worms on land, or can they swim so I can put them right by the toads while the toads are in the water? If I have to put the Meal Worms on land, do I also need to put the Toads on the same land?

    4. How many Meal Worms per day does each Fire Belly Toad eat?

    Thanks!!!

    Re: Meal Worms???

    This is from the caresheet;

    Diet

    Fire-bellies have great appetites and will readily accept crickets, mealworms, silkworms, waxworms, phoenix worms, butterworms, flies, etc. They will eat just about any live insect they can fit in their mouth. They will also make attempts at catching any live fish you may have in with them.

    Our frogs are fed a diet of small crickets, offered every other day. Each frog is offered prey until they begin to ignore them. At that point we stop adding crickets.

    if your crickets are dying, there is something wrong with your setup. They should be living up to 6 weeks, since you are getting smaller ones.

    What are you feeding them? Is there good ventilation in the container? is it warm enough? Too warm? Do they have ample hiding space? Toilet paper and paper towel tubes make good hiding areas for crickets.

    Re: Meal Worms???

    Actually, I think most of the crickets were dying because they were drowning themselves in the little water bowl in the cricket cage, so I switched to the gel stuff for their water. So far none of them have died yet, so that's good...
    I have decided not to get meal worms because I REALLY don't like creepy crawly worm things in my house. And you even have to put them in the FRIDGE. EEEEWWWW....!!!!

    Lol, you don't have to keep them in the fridge, you can leave them out and let them turn into beetles and have a continuous supply of mealworms. The fridge will stop them from pupating, but they would still need to be taken out of the fridge to gutload.

    Crickets can drown pretty easily, If you are using small crickets you can use a cotton ball soaked in water and keep it in a plastic soda bottle top and just change it daily.

    Or just put a slice of potato or carrot in there for their moisture.
