Re-done FBT Setup (PICTURES!!!!)

Hey all-

Just wanted to post a few pictures of my newly re-done fire-bellied toad setup. The old one was looking a little nasty It is a 29H with about 2/3 water. I'm using a 10g internal filter figuring I have about 3-4 gal of water. The land side is pretty elaborate with substrates and such (aquarium gravel/some sort of shredded bark/eco-earth/moss) the divider between the 2 sides somehow leakes a little so some water has seeped into the gravel hence the extra substrates. Under the fake cliff face/island is the eco-earth stuff for comfort. I am managing to keep the sides clear of hard water build up scraping with a razor blade about every two weeks. (time consuming, but well worth the effort, found no ther way to keep it clear) I use tap water that has been treated with Aquasafe by Tetra (used in fish tanks for yrs) All the other plants are actually fake by so realistic!! I have a total of 7 FBTs in here, but I think only 1 male (hmm... he probably is VERY happy ) Hope everyone likes the new setup and hopefully it will give a few ideas, too.

Re: Re-done FBT Setup (PICTURES!!!!)

Do you remember how much it cost to put it all together?
I'm trying to get the cost of what I'm gonna do together.
I'm planning something pretty much like yours.
A divider between the land and water side, live plants, all that kind of fun stuff.
I'm probably not gonna use as big a tank that you are though, unless I can find one really cheap.
I'm not sure how many frogs I'm going to get yet.
I'm waiting til I find a good tank that's cheap and local.
I'm actually doing pretty good too. :]
20 gallon high for $35, and a 35 gallon [[with a stand and a thrown in 10 gal]] for $65.
I've asked the person selling the 35 if they'll just sell the 35, no stand or anything, for cheaper.
We'll see how that goes.
I'm wanting to breed the little guys.
I think it'd be fun. :]]

Re: Re-done FBT Setup (PICTURES!!!!)

My setup was pretty cheap. I used to have tropical fish, so I had the tank and all the fake plants and stuff. All I needed to buy was the internal filter and a few accessories. I remember getting the tank, stand, and light hood for $75. Most of the fake plants were under $5 each. The filter cost me $20 but it also came with 3 free replacement cartridges. I think I spent a total of just under $100 for everything. Pretty easy to keep going once you get the initial cost under control. I spend under $15 a month on up-keep for it. Hope this gives you some help. Good luck and happy breeding!!

I would ditch that moss and aquarium gravel. Both can cause impaction, and just stick with the eco earth. Otherwise its very nice

Lauren, for FBTs you want to go long vs. high, they won't used the height.

Re: Re-done FBT Setup (PICTURES!!!!)

Liz-

The moss and aquarium gravel are pretty well buried under the eco-earth. (I changed the layers around after the pics were taken) Figured that 4-5 inches of eco earth was a little much to waste, considering the leak) Used the gravel and moss as fillers only. What about using the gravel on the water side, should I find something else for that?

Re: Re-done FBT Setup (PICTURES!!!!)

Liz,
I know they wouldn't use the hight... that's why I'm leaning more towards the 35 gal.
I'm going to see if the seller will sell only the tank for less than $65... they haven't replied to my email.
So yeah. Hehh
