Re: I Need Some Help Please
Ok, we have an appointment tomorrow at 230. I seriously lucked out, because the vet I'd chosen before we moved here is certified/licensed in reptile and amphibian medicine. That means she can treat all our pets! It's a first for us. She comes very highly recommended for rabbits and chinchillas, and I found out she's also very good for birds, so now I'll be able to tell people if she's good for reptiles and amphibians. I emailed her and asked a long list of questions, so I know we at least think alike somewhat.
They were going to charge $48/toad just for the exam. Which, normally we wouldn't mind, but it's pretty evident they've all got the same thing. I asked if we could bring one toad in and get meds for all 4 (I was honestly joking, but I guess they thought I was serious), so they're now giving us a "first time customer" discount and seeing all 4 for the price of one. I can honestly say we will never get another animal from a pet store. The rabbits were all deathly ill when I rescued them. Only the budgies and snails have been healthy when we brought them home. Thanks again everyone. |

Re: I Need Some Help Please
HANG ON.
I showed the photo to a few of my friends, and they think he is just about to shed. I'd hang on a few days.

Re: I Need Some Help Please
Oh! Well in that case, we'll call and see if we can reschedule for a later date. That way we won't lose our spot, but if it's just shedding, then we can cancel.
How embarrassing if that's what it is. lol Should I provide something extra moist for them, besides just the water? |

Re: I Need Some Help Please
Just the water and moist coco-fiber is all they need.

You are new to the care of these animals and, as such, should not be expected to be totally familiar with everything about them. Your diligence and careful observation of what, as far as you know, is some sort of problem and your immediate willingness to consult a vet over the "problem" is highly commendable. Far too often on these boards we are confronted with novices who have an animal that is seriously ill and ask what to do. Despite the recommendations by experienced people who have maintained the same species and dealt with similar problems, to have them seek veterinary care,...they refuse, for a myriad of reasons. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. Thumbs up!

Re: I Need Some Help Please
OK, i took a good look at my toads when I got home. Low and behold, 2 of the toads have the same spots. I'm going to take a wild stab that nothing is wrong with your toads!

Re: I Need Some Help Please
Thank you, both of you!
I'm so glad it's nothing to worry about. I went out and got a spray bottle and the Little Dripper for during the day, if I'm not home to mist them. I also got the de-chlorinator and while I was at Walmart grocery shopping, I was surprised to see a basking spot that has no rough edges! So I got that, too. Tomorrow I'm going to rearrange their setup a little so the basking spot goes in the back left corner (I got it because it's like a cave, and once I get the 1/2 water-1/2 land set up, I'll be able to use that for them to climb out of the water safely). G'Kar likes to climb, so I figured that would be a nice habitat enrichment for him. Then for now, their pool will go a tad to the right. Thanks again. I'm so excited to know nothing is wrong. They're such great toads. Last night we heard some of them croaking and it was so cool. I'm already attached to the little guys. They have a travel cage, too, in case of emergency. It's the little plastic critter keeper, but I figured in a pinch it'd work. And now I have a verified vet for them, too. What a relief! |

Re: I Need Some Help Please
Sounds like you have everything under control. They will greatly like a 1/2 water 1/2 land set up. Mine do.

Re: I Need Some Help Please
That is definitely not fungus, lol. What I was picturing is bigger spots that get furry or fuzzy looking. Koi and goldfish are notorious for that stuff. I think you are alright, I have had fire belly toads in before that look like that. It will go away. I was also told the same thing, that they are shedding when they look like that. Ick, does look like that though on fish, just like someone shook a salt shaker on them.
