Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(
I don't know what this is and petsmart was just as helpful as my 2 year old.
I didn't search for this as I don't know how to describe it. Looks like bread mold and open sores. ![]() ![]() Just found him this way today. Apparently yesterday he was seen in good health and was no problem at all, even a hint. He smells bad, doesn't want to move and I found him in an empty water dish. could this be a result of too much water?? I had a texas and marine toad and both would love to sit in the water for a long time and they eventually looked very odd, so I took the water away and they went back normal dry looking, but never like this. I've had him for barley 2 weeks and fed him 20 crickets (of course not all at once) and there is still 2 live crickets in there....can the crickets bite or cause harm to him??? Please anybody with something close to an answer/solution!!! I'm desprate to save him! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(
Take him to a vet!
It is imperative that you take him to a vet, we aren't able to diagnose anything 100% online. Look for a vet here: ARAV Herp Vet Connection While you are at it tell us about his husbandry, what size is his tank, whats in it, does he share it with another animal, what do you clean it with, etc. |

oh man, not looking good at all. A vet visit is in order. Looks like some sort of fungus. He will need medication.

He is almost able to eat mice, but not quite, so crickets it is for now. I get them from Alley cat and petsmart. His tank was broken and I had to move him to a rubbermaid tub till I can find another. The tub had scrap paper in it prior to him. No chemicals or food or the related...unless ink has a deadly odor?? There was thick chopped bark dust recommended by alley cat which works great, but it all had to be thrown away due to the old glass tank being broken. Instead of barkdust, I put in shredded paper. It's only temporary till this weekend (or today since I have this day off) Currently he does share the tub with another animal...the only cricket he didn't eat. Hes been in there for only 3 days. |

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(
That needs to come out.. NOW. The ink from the paper will harm him and could be causing the problem. Frogs and Toads absorb everything through their skin and that's probably the problem. Get a brick of shredded coconut husk, its expandable and use that. He would be better on nothing instead of paper.
Wash him in treated/non-chlorinated water. Get some neosporin, WITHOUT pain killer and apply to the wounds.

And when you change out the substrate be sure to wash the rubbermaid container down REALLY well as well.

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(
Got a 30gal tank, shredded coconut husk, white reptile type bulb and neosporin non-p/r.
So I let him soak in the water for an hour or 2 to loosen up any weird stuff that may be on him, washed him and a lot of crap came off him. He's now changed to a dark gray instead of the really dark green he was a few days ago. I tried applying the neo before washing him thinking the sooner the better, but the q-tip got really clogged with......something. Just turned very dark colors when rubbing it on him. So I washed most of the crap off of there and flipped him upside down to see a few things. 1. reaction to see if hes 'all there' and 2. if theres anything on his belly that needs attention. He did absolutely nothing when put on his back. I've not lost hope, but he really looks like a gonner to be honest. I've taken pictures of his new enclosure. ![]() ![]() ![]() Does his pupil look very small and abnormal? Here I used part of the coconut stuff to point to where there is a small bump that is moving once every 3-5 seconds. ![]() I think it was too late to take him to a vet before I posted this as the ink/paper mixed with him in the water 2-3 grueling days before. He is not responding at all, not closing his eyes when I touch either eye lid, belly doesn't move when upside down, but that strange dry white stuff went away. Also...do marine toads have poison glands like rococco toads do? He had/has white liquid coming out of those glands behind his head at a decent rate. This is a bad sign, too? |

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(
I'm sorry to hear about your marine toad. I can tell you care about the little guy. He needs vet care or he will die. If he is alive tomorrow please take him to a vet.
I'm sure some people have success with the substrate shown for snakes, but I personally would not ever use that coconut bark for any of my amphibians due to bowl impaction. For amphibians it has the additional problem of drying them out, your pet store should have never sold you this for a toad. I think schelegelbagel was talking about a dirt-like shredded coconut husk that is packed into bricks and put into water to expand as it soaks up the moisture. it holds moisture and a Marine toad would love to bury itself partially or fully in it because Marine toads love to bury themselves somewhat or hide under a shelter to feel safe. brand names of this expandable fiber are Bed-a-Beast, tropicalsoil, Zoo Med Eco Earth and others...His substrate right now is not good, but not the most of your problems. I have a pair of giant toads who are cousins to your toad that I have raised from tadpoles. I guarantee that if he isn't taken to a vet asap he is sadly going to die. Do this and post again and get a care sheet about some husbandry questions, otherwise it will not matter. Did you catch this Marine toad? Marine toads do have poison glands (the cane toad is famous for it), but likely it is a bi-product of the infection (like pus), not anything the toad would normally produce, but it is hard to say as they do secrete it when they are stressed. A vet can tell you all this for sure and will be able to help him or end his suffering in a humane way. It is the only solution available at this point i'm afraid. Again I'm very sorry to hear about your marine toad. |
